Japan should conduct computer simulations on nuclear weapons: Ishihara
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara said Friday that Japan should carry out computer simulations on nuclear weapons as such experiments can be conducted within a short period of time.
Ishihara said during a press conference that the United States has conducted new computer simulations to check the effectiveness of its nuclear warheads, even after the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to U.S. President Barack Obama, and added, "Japan should be able to do that much."
"A simulation can be completed within three months. We also have lots of plutonium," he said, but he did not specify which of the U.S. experiments he was referring to.
The outspoken governor also said of Japan's defense policy, "If Japan does not become a strong military nation, we will definitely lose our standing" in the international community.

Uh-oh.
I suspect this would become more than just another political grandstanding.
Well, as long as they don’t start talking about a “Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere”.....
If I lived next door to Red China and North Korea I’d like to have a nuke or two myself.
Japan should have nuclear weapons to counter the Chinese and North Koreans.
I read once here — it might have been one of your posts — that if the government of Japan decided to acquire nuclear weapons on a Monday, they could have them, ready to use, by the following Friday.
“We also have lots of plutonium”
Is that left over from the LAST time they acted up?;)
Chicom is already claiming its own. "Co-Prosperity Sphere" business is getting crowded.
Let them go for it. It will create problems for North Korea and China. Probably would affect the balance of power in the region that would benefit both Japan as well as America.
I see the same thing. Agreed.
They got tons of it from spent fuel rods of their nuclear power plants which have been operating for decades.
“The outspoken governor also said of Japan’s defense policy, “If Japan does not become a strong military nation, we will definitely lose our standing” in the international community.”
...actually if Japan doesn’t become strong, AND QUICK, they will get cleaned off the planet, for the Chinese (and Koreans for that matter) have LONG memories.
Good for Japan...if our big goal now is to disarm and become a Third world hell-hole, Japan will NEED to step up and take care of their own needs. Hopefully South Korea and Taiwan (and even Vietnam, now) will figure out the same, in time.
If today’s credit default means that we will have to pull our troops out of Asia, Europe and the Middle East, then Japan will have to take over its own defense.
I suspect that seismology has something to do with this..since the big quake/tsunami, lots more major quakes close offshore...If they ever had a really bad one that clobbered a good piece of Toyko, Japan would be essentially defenseless, because ALL of the military ( excuse me..self-defense forces) would be focused on rescue and relief) They need a viable deterrent..that can only be nukes..
nuclear/snuclear... we had a balance of power until Obama and Iran came along, now everyone is thinking they need the latest. Reality? Who needs war? Then again ~ who needs Iran and Obama?
If you remove weapons from the greatest threats, muslims, 95% of the war issues dry up. Conversations are off the table.
The financial crisis that Obama is invoking, on the world is enough to make many want to go to war. All the commodities have Obamrisk in their prices....
His Israel position has put the whole mid est on a new war trajectory, which will be global....
so,
its probably best to get Iran and Obama out of the picture.
Yeah, Japan wants to defend itself! As long as they don’t point the weapons at us, I’m fine with it.
Nonsense! They have America to defend them...
Uh.
*nevermind*
Even without any major quake, Fukushima crisis is doing grave damage for economy and public health. Heightened sense of fear generally radicalize population.
Yes indeed. I don't see a nuclear Japan as a threat to the US at all; as I said, I believe it will be mutually beneficial. Taiwan as well. Post World War II Japan is a success story, they are one of the Asian nations that are politically stable. They could probably put such a device together as fast as they crank out PS3 games.
You are right about North Korea. If memory serves me correctly, North Korea tested a missile by sending it across Japanese air space and into the Pacific. Who can blame them for wanting retaliatory capability?. I say go for it Japan.
