Dick Cheney’s publisher, media companies and readers are gearing up for the Aug. 30 release of the former vice president’s much-anticipated memoir.

Simon & Schuster’s conservative imprint, Threshold, has released the cover image for “In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir” and promises that Cheney for the first time “opens up about a life and career in politics.”

Media companies are scrambling to land interviews with the former vice president. NBC news will do a multi-part sitdown with the author starting with a prime time Dateline interview on Aug. 29. That will be followed the next day by Cheney’s live appearance on the Today show

Breakfast raises funds, honors Cheneys

###

With three donations equaling more than half a million dollars, it was up to the nearly 1,200 folks in attendance at breakfast early Tuesday morning to make $1 million worth of dreams come true for Casper boys and girls ages 6 to 18 who are members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Wyoming.

The actual number raised was closer to $750,000, but it was not for lack of trying at the 13th annual Awards and Recognition Breakfast on the floor of the Casper Events Center.

U.S. Sen. John Barrasso recalled that he was asked to emcee the first breakfast, held in the lower level of the Casper Petroleum Club with 50 people in attendance.

*snip*

Former Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, both Natrona County High School graduates, were the honored guests at the event, which attracted nearly 1,200 people. Although there were scattered empty places among the 1,239 reserved seats, it clearly was the largest crowd in the history of the breakfast.

Mick and Susie McMurry pledged $300,000 to help finance the club’s Great Futures Start Here capital campaign and to name part of the campaign’s expansion the Dick and Lynne Cheney Cowboy Ethics Center.

John Martin and the Martin Family Foundation pledged $200,000, and an anonymous donor pledged $20,000 raised at the breakfast from first-time donors.

Breakfast attendees pledged an additional $241,000, bringing the total for the two-hour event to $761,000, Bright said Tuesday afternoon.

Gov. Matt Mead greeted breakfast guests by explaining the importance of the Boys & Girls Clubs.

“As our country faces many struggles, the most important factor in the well-being of our country is the kids of today,” Mead said.

NBC News correspondent and Natrona County High School graduate Pete Williams introduced the Cheneys, and said that, unlike many of the folks who count themselves among Washington’s most important, “Dick and Lynne’s circle of loyal friends has steadily grown throughout their four decades of public service. They did not abandon those who helped them along their way.”

Williams said NCHS Class of 1959 classmates of the Cheneys “have been to more events at the White House and the vice president’s residence than people who claim to be Washington insiders have.”

Williams recalled that Lynne Cheney introduced her husband of nearly 47 years at a Republican National Convention by saying that she cannot imagine a discussion that would not benefit from his presence.

And Williams told a personal story from June 1989, in which he said then-Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney — at the time Williams’ boss — “saved us from ourselves and saved our careers. That’s the kind of thing that inspires loyalty when your boss cleans up after you.”

Lynne Cheney told the breakfast crowd that she and her husband feel so lucky to have grown up in Wyoming, and particularly in Casper.

She said they see the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Wyoming as an embodiment of the spirit that Dick remembers as a teen, when everybody in Casper pulled for all of the kids, awaiting word on how the 13-year-old Pony League baseball team that he was a member of fared at a tournament in Washington state.

“Those boys all kept every scrap of newspaper with their names in it and the write-ups of those games,” she said.

“I don’t know of any community in the country as blessed with certain folks who are always there to help as Casper is with the McMurrys and Martins,” said Dick Cheney, standing for his remarks but appearing thin and at times short of breath.

He said when his father was transferred to Casper in 1954 by the federal government’s Soil Conservation Service, it didn’t take him long to discover 13-year-old blond baton twirler Lynne Vincent.

“We’ll have our 47th anniversary in just about two weeks,” he said, “and if I hadn’t moved to Casper, Lynne would have married someone else, and he would have been vice president of the United States.”

God bless and his health. He's made of steel.

I actually have Cheney’s outfit in one of my closets. Plaid Polyester suit and dark blue shirt and fat tie. I pull it out for meetings and family affairs just for the hell of it once in a while. My wife and kid loves when I do that crap. Always fun. I also have the market cornered on leisure suits.

“and if I hadn’t moved to Casper, Lynne would have married someone else, and he would have been vice president of the United States.”

For being such a powerful personality, he really is a very self-effacing man. He looks very thin, and not in the best of health in the picture from the breakfast. He has truly given his ALL to this country, and I'm thankful he was willing to do that for us. I hope he and Lynne have many more years together; they sure deserve it!

Looking forward to this book!

There aren’t many “famous” people I’d have any interest in meeting, but Dick Cheney is one of the few exceptions.
