Thank you so much for your hard work on these hurricane threads, FRiend! You provide an invaluable service to so many of us here at FR, and I appreciate all of the vital information about these ever-changing storms.

We are "on guard" up here in the People's Republik of Connecticut... looks like we may be in Irene's crosshairs. Joe Bastardi (of whatever weather outfit he works for now) said last night on O'Reilly that Irene looks a lot like Hurricane Gloria of 1985, only worse. My sister and her husband live near Providence on Greenwich Bay (off Narragansett Bay). I'm worried about them...

Generators flying off the shelves here in Connecticut, per WTIC radio...

So, has the Navy relocated from Norfolk? I hear that’s a sure sign of possible weather-related problems.

Wow, I hope she won’t mind possibly being without power or water for a week or two! Does she mind if she’s stuck there for a long while?

I see you live in NY. Depending where, you might need to get over here if Irene is headed your way.

Jeff Masters really spells it out in his analysis. Particularly disturbing info about the highest tides of the year occurring during the same time.

Trust me, the first time the winds kick up and rattle the windows, my mother will be screeching to get out of there. Those folks don't have a clue what they are in for with my mother hunkered down in the house with them during a hurricane.

It seems to be headed our direction. Too bad we have no “hatches to batten down”. And we lost the barn Feb 4th. Only the house is left. :-)

Will they pick up the Yankees for free?

I think he is speaking right now.

Word is he has declared a state of emergency.

If this comes even close to the shore, lots of homes are going to be destroyed.

In 1962 there was a storm that took out most of Brigatine Island.

There weren't many houses on the island at that time. We get a repeat, it is going to be very ugly.

Happy to be here (as long as the power stays on!) No baseball this weekend, that's fer sure... ;-)

{{{hugs}}}

I am a bit worried, to be honest. It's raining again right now, and the ground is already saturated from all the rain we've had this spring and summer. We live in a forest of TALL trees... not a good mix with a hurricane approaching.

No kidding! You need to get prepared! Lawn furniture, anything that can be blown by strong winds needs to be secured. Food & water like your northeasters...or whatever you call them.

You might be without water and electrcity for several days.

Mango anything is good! :) I lived in the Philippines as a kid, I don't recall having them before that. Lovely that you can get them all over the place now. OK here is the link:

http://eatitanyway.com/cook-it/mango-honey-sherbet/ Only thing is, because it is sweetened with honey it will harden pretty solid in the freezer, so either eat it right away (what we do) or zap it about 5 or so seconds in the microwave just enough to be able to scoop it out if you had leftovers. MMMMMM it's good. And not overly sweet (altho you can make it sweeter if you want to)

I mean to add, I only just started using coconut milk in stuff, great thing to keep on your shelf. Now THAT is probably good hurricane food! (to make this appropriate so NN doesn’t kick us out of here!)
