News emerged on Friday Ms Gardner was in the middle of an alimony battle with her ex-husband, Kenneth Gardner, when she disappeared in Aruba.
The pair were divorced on May 6, 2009 after eleven years of marriage.
According to RadarOnline.com, Mr Gardner was ordered to pay his ex-wife $2,000 per month for 36 months and two lump sum payments of $15,000 in October of 2009 and 2010.
According to filings in the Circuit Court for Frederick County in Maryland, Mr Gardner petitioned to modify the alimony earlier this year, which Ms gardner opposed.
A settlement conference with a mediator is scheduled for October 7, 2011.
Prior to their separation, the couple lived in luxury suburban Washington, D.C. According to Radar, their their home had two mortgages, however, and Mr Gardner lost his job with a construction company.
Ms Jones said Ms Gardner had met Giordano on a dating website more than a year ago and her best friend was aware that he had a history of domestic abuse allegations.
She was surprised to hear Ms Gardner tell her that she was going to Aruba with Giordano - but her friend had recently lost her job as a dental assistant and was having relationship trouble.
Ms Jones said Ms Gardner, whom she described as a trusting and sweet friend, had been with her boyfriend Richard Forester for more than two years and just wanted to get away.
‘She made me feel better, that it was going to be OK and she was just going to clear her head,’ Ms Jones told ABC News. ‘She was just so light-hearted about it and kind of needed to get away.’
