People have NO idea the hit that NJ is gonna take...that's because the storm is just offshore..parallelling the coast for about 100 miles...it's flat...at best a few feet above sea level...lots of little beach towns....the BIG waves will be coming ashore for hours...the beaches, dunes, and most everything within 1/4 mile of the coast line will be toast...the question is will they allow them to rebuild after..that's gonna be interesting....

Question: Anyone ever seen any engineering studies to determine how stong a wind the Wasgington Monument can take?

I have a question....is this significantly different than the Nor’easters they get in winter in terms of wind? I’m not familiar enough with the weather up there, but I would think they would also generate some pretty significant waves as well.

After the earthquake, and the cracks, those studies are not valid now.

Hadn’t thought about that.

“how stong a wind the Wasgington Monument can take”

I don’t know much about the “crack” from the other day (I think it’s just near the top), but barring that, I’d think it can stand quite alot. It is after all of dense stones, and is a very thin needle that just doesn’t have much surface area to strike, so there is less force than say on a similarly tall, average business building of any contstruction. Further, I’m sure the area has been hit with major storms a few times (although that can add to fatigue), and it has not failed. The quake perhaps might mean the top falls off - but I doubt that if it’s not all the way through.
