Report: Susan G. Komen donated over $600,000 to Planned Parenthood in 2009-2010

STAFFORD, Virginia, August 26, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Even as scientific evidence connecting breast cancer to abortion and the use of the oral contraceptive pill continues to mount, one breast cancer cure charity, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, is funding the abortion giant Planned Parenthood to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to a new report.

Stop Planned Parenthood (STOPP), a project of the American Life League dedicated to shutting down Planned Parenthood, released a report on August 24 detailing the $629,159 in funding various Komen affiliates contributed directly to Planned Parenthood affiliates across the US in 2009-2010, according to the 990 Forms Komen submitted to the IRS for those years.

While Komen has repeatedly denied the abortion-breast cancer link, numerous researchers say that the evidence is already overwhelming.

The issue arose as early as 1994 when Dr. Janet Daling, a pro-choice cancer researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington, found a connection between abortion and breast cancer.

Dr. Daling’s findings, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, revealed that women under age 18 who had an induced abortion had an increased breast cancer risk of 150%. Overall, she found, women who have an induced abortion have an increased breast cancer risk of 50%.

“I would have loved to have found no association between breast cancer and abortion,” Dr. Daling wrote, “but our research is rock solid, and our data is accurate. It’s not a matter of believing. It’s a matter of what is.”

Numerous other studies since then have corroborated her findings.

In July of this year Karen Malec of the Coalition of Abortion/Breast Cancer criticized Komen for fundraising to find a cure for breast cancer, and then giving the money to Planned Parenthood which, in her words, “is the primary cause of the breast cancer epidemic.”

“It’s more than ironic that Planned Parenthood receives contributions from an organization allegedly dedicated to the eradication of breast cancer,” Malec said. “Abortion and the birth control pill – which Planned Parenthood sells – are risk factors for the disease. It’s certainly bad for business to tell women the truth about the abortion-breast cancer link. Knowledge of that risk would cause some to turn their backs on induced abortion and cut into Planned Parenthood’s profits.”

Malec also noted that, according to Komen’s 990 Forms submitted to the IRS for 2010, the charity gave millions to at least five research and educational facilities that engage in embryonic stem cell research, research that has yet to provide even a single positive treatment or cure for any disease, yet involves the destruction of countless unborn children.

“Komen’s Parent Return for 2010 shows that millions of dollars in grants were given to research facilities that have policies supporting experiments on human embryos,” Malec said.

The headline lies. Susan G. Komen croaked in 1980, she didn’t donate squat to PP in 2009 or 2010. Maybe the Foundation did, but that’s not what the headline says.

I never give to any of these organizations. Think about it - it is not in the organizations best interest to find a cure. If a cure is found - they are out of business. I would love to know the millions of dollars that have been poured into cancer reserach with virtually NO RESULTS.

Can I ask a stupid question of someone?

How can the Susan G. Komen organization give money to Planned Parenthood? If donors give money to the Susan G. Komen organization, isn’t that organization required to spend that money as designated by donors, not turn around and give it to another organization? Or is Planned Parenthood somehow involved in breast cancer research? This article makes it sound like the Susan G. Komen organization is subsidizing Planned Parenthood, and it’s hard to believe that it’s legal to take donations and turn around and give it to some unrelated organization.

even if you are not prolife, komen is a worthless, ripoff charity!!!

I'm a life long runner and komen is a ripoff!!! They advertise and hold races and walks to to raise money to pay salaries, to run ads, to hold races, to raise money to pay salaries!!! They call it "Awareness"

If you combine the local affiliates and the national only 10% goes “research”, and or abortion grants.

They are a ripoff!

This is discouraging as we have donated to this foundation several times . The wishes of the deceased obituary mentioned it. This is not good news for me.............

This is old news. The SGK website used to have an explanation of this on a page off their website (ww5.komen.org)
which was removed, and later the cached page was also
removed (by Google?).

They have interests in shopping malls and other activities
having nothing to do with breast cancer.

I suggest doing a search on Komen and Planned Parenthood.
It should prove enlightening.

Heres the page they deleted. They invite you to visit their website for “more detailed information”..

March 2011

An open letter about Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and Planned Parenthood

This year, as in the past, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is being criticized by some for funding a handful
of women’s health programs run by, or with ties to, Planned Parenthood. We’re writing this letter to
explain our position and to correct any misinformation you may have heard about this subject.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure exists for only one reason: to save lives and to end breast cancer forever.
In the past 29 years, we’ve invested more than $1.9 billion to accomplish those goals through research
and for programs that educate, screen and treat people in communities all around the world.

Early screening through mammograms and education is critical to end the suffering from this disease: 98
percent of women treated for early stage breast cancer, before it spreads, are alive five years later. The
widespread use of mammography and heightened public awareness of breast cancer both contribute to
these favorable statistics.

And while Komen Affiliates provide funds to pay for screening, education and treatment programs in
dozens of communities, in some areas, the only place that poor, uninsured or under-insured women can
receive these services are through programs run by Planned Parenthood.

These facilities serve rural women, poor women, Native American women, women of color, and the un-
and under-insured. As part of our financial arrangements, we monitor our grantees twice a year to be sure
they are spending the money in line with our agreements, and we are assured that Planned Parenthood
uses these funds only for breast health education, screening and treatment programs.

As long as there is a need for health care for these women, Komen Affiliates will continue to fund the
facilities that meet that need.

One year ago, two Catholic ethicists – Ron Hamel, Ph.D. and Michael Panicola, Ph.D. – examined the
moral implications of our funding decision. They concluded that it was morally permissible for the church
to be involved with Komen in light of its funding agreements with Planned Parenthood.

“The fact that some Komen affiliates, at times, provide funding to Planned Parenthood specifically and
solely for breast health services cannot on the face of it be construed as wrongdoing,” the ethicists wrote.
“The good that Komen does and the harm that would come to so many women if Komen ceased
to exist or ceased to be funded would seem to be a sufficiently proportionate reason” for Catholics
to support our funding decisions (emphasis added).

Another piece of misinformation being spread by many who criticize Komen for the Cure for its Planned
Parenthood grants is that abortion causes breast cancer. Well-conducted research consistently fails to
support this claim. We agree with the bulk of scientific evidence – from the National Cancer Institute,
Harvard, a rigorous study in Denmark and from Oxford University – that there is no conclusive link
between breast cancer and induced abortion or miscarriage.

It is important for women to receive accurate information about risk factors for breast cancer. There are
steps a woman can take to reduce her risk of developing breast cancer (for example, maintaining a
healthy weight) as well as important steps every woman should take to make sure that, if she does
develop breast cancer, it is detected and treated as soon as possible. A complete list of risk factors and
screening recommendations can be found on our website www.komen.org.

More detailed information is on our website at www.komen.org. We invite you to review the documents
there, and we thank you again for taking time to investigate our position on this issue.

So, money that is donated for breast cancer research and treatment is given to Planned Parenthood for abortions? No more donations from my family.

Maybe they should post a disclaimer on all their “buy this merchandise and x% will be donated to Susan Komen organization, which will in turn give x% to fund abortions “
