Rick Perry’s Support Skyrockets Among Church Goers
The State Column ^ | August 27, 2011 | staff

Texas Governor Rick Perry is polling very well at the national-level. In fact, the longest-serving Texas Governor recently won a Gallup poll of Republican and Republican-leaning independents.

Perry pulled in a larger percentage of the vote than former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.). Perry won the Gallup poll with 29 percent of the vote. Romney took second place with 17 percent of the vote. Paul grabbed third place with 13 percent of the vote and Bachmann took fourth place with 10 percent of the vote.

This is the first Gallup poll to survey Republicans and Republican-leaning independents with Perry as an announced candidate. In July, a Gallup poll found that Perry had 18 percent of the vote as an unannounced candidate. Perry took second place in this poll, trailing Romney by 4 percent.

In the latest Gallup poll, Perry also finished strong among church goers, especially weekly church goers. Among those surveyed who never or seldom attend church, Perry took first place with 24 percent of the vote. However, when Gallup surveyed those who attend church on a monthly basis, Perry’s support jumped to 27 percent. Perry’s support skyrocketed when Gallup surveyed those who attend church on a weekly basis. In this instance, Perry grabbed 34 percent of the vote. Romney, who took second place under this condition, trailed Perry by 18 percentage points.

The Gallup poll also revealed that Perry has strong support among the elderly. Perry took in 40 percent of the vote when those surveyed were 65 years of age or older. In this instance, Romney pulled in 16 percent of the vote.

Despite his support among monthly and weekly church goers, Perry’s religious beliefs have put the GOP candidate in some hot water in the past. On August 6th, Perry held a prayer rally in Houston, Texas. During his prayer rally, Perry called on God to help “those who cannot see the light in the midst of all the darkness.” As many as 30,000 people attended Perry’s prayer rally.

However, not everyone was impressed by Perry’s prayer rally. Some were concerned that Perry’s prayer rally was a sign that the Texas Governor won’t be able to appeal to a broader audience of Republicans who want a candidate who can defeat President Obama.

Regardless of the popularity of Perry’s prayer rally, the Texas Governor remains extremely popular among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents who are church goers.

Where in Perry’s record does it show he passes the true test—that he will do what’s right when nobody’s looking?

I've seen your posts, asking that question.

Everyone is always looking at someone in office.

How can one answer a question formulated like that?

If you don't mind, who is your candidate?

Per Dr. Jack Wheeler: If you want perfection, die and go to heaven, as that's the only place you'll find it. If you want a Messiah, pray for the Second Coming, but don't demand it of a Republican presidential candidate. If you want miracles, pray that the Almighty will perform them, but don't expect them to be performed by a human being, POTUS or no.

From what I’ve seen, only one presidential contender has passed this test, and it’s not Perry.

And just who would that be?

“Rick Perry’s Support Skyrockets Among Church Goers”

Church goers are either (sarcasm) socialist or stupid. There, I beat the trolls to it.

I understood your point. My point to you was that (if you truly are seeking to be persuaded), you should check his record yourself, keep an open mind, you may find that he has met that test. Moreover, I was trying to point out to you that if you held a strict standard like that on the greaest conservaive president in our lifetime, even he would fail. If it was 1980 right now, you’d be saying that, when Reagan was called to take a stand against abortion, he folded like a cheap suit and voted for the therapeutic abortion act. He had a chance to draw a line in the sand on taxes, yet folded again as Governor. Perry hasn’t done such things. As for “integrity”, when you find that machine that can look into the mind of a man and reveal the truth, let us know. There are doubts about all candidates and questionable actions as well. You say you’ve found one candidate. Great. I’m sure if you post that person’s name, I’ll be able to tear them apart with questions about their prior actions. All have skeletons because all are human, just like the Gipper. BTW, I have no intentions of doing that because I respect all of the republican candidates and wouldn’t dare impugn them in public. Why feed the dem trolls.

Perry = prosperity, Obama = austerity

As you're against Perry, it necessarily follows that you are for Obama. Closet Liberal.

It is doubtful Perry can pass such a test. Are your requests realistic? I want the best, most conservative I can get that can win.

These purity tests can be destructive.

On another note, I wish Perry had not signed these pledges. I'm getting sick of each group demanding a prospective candidate sign their particular pledge or they'll withhold support.

I'll have more respect for the candidate that tells these groups to go take a flying leap. Their word and record should be good enough. Pledges gets one in a trap and who knows what kind of convoluted legislation may appear.

Say that again! It’s so funny it’s priceless. Mebbe you could video yourself saying it and put it up on U-tube; it’d be an instant viral hit.

Perry is nothing but Obama in Whiteface.

I can't imagine any intelligent, reasonable person agreeing with this statement.

Has Rick Perry been tested, I mean really tested? Do we have evidence that he will do the right thing, when it’s the hardest thing to do? I don’t mean will he say the right things when it makes him sound conservative or when it goes along with his political ambitions. That’s not a test, it’s the easy thing to do. I mean in all of his many years as a politician, is there any record that Rick Perry will make the hard choice to do what’s right according to his convictions, even though it brings a heavy personal price and/or a huge political risk?

That's impossible to determine until the suituation requiring such decisions occurs. Kind of like soldiers going into battle - not odd for the "real macho men" to lose it ans the apparent Harvey Milquetoast guys to perform some really heroic deeds.

If you want "proof" you're SOL for now. You might also ask, "Who do we have that we can be certain about in this area?" Let me know if you have a name that might meet the criteria.

IMHO, Palin has shown signs of the ability/willingness, and despite what we keep hearing about Perry, he has the potential.

No. You are mistaken. In writing “PBR Streetgang...” , he referenced a line from the leftist propaganda movie Apocalypse Now. You know, the one that depicted all of our Vietnam vets as drug crazed lunatics, fighting for nothing. At least he's consistent - following leftist propaganda storylines that piss all over good people in America.

The great thing about the internet is you can actually see that crazy .005%. It's like a zoo of crazy ideas.

Anyone that walked outside their home and asked random citizens if they thought 'Rick Perry was Obama in whiteface' would be laughed at. Not once. Every single time. Imagine going to the mall or somewhere crowded, and just stopping people. How many hundreds would you have to go through before someone stopped and said, "Yeah, man, you're on to something. He's like Karl Marx in chaps."

The internet does provide those cranky handfuls a place to pretend that there's some groundswell to their ideas.

That’s a good point, it’s not so simple to answer the question. But really, it’s the most important question of all.

RINOs, who were at first thought to be conservative, are everywhere.

This tells us how widespread the problem is. And the problem, simply put, is corruption. Corruption of principle.

The antidote to corruption in a politician is a very rare quality. Meaning that the vast majority of politicians who sound conservative during a campaign are in fact, to varying degrees, untrustworthy. We know this from common sense, but so often we forget it. Me included. But objective, historical evidence can shake this problem.

I’m a Palin guy, because I’ve seen what she did, at great personal risk and when it seemed politically nonviable, to fight against crony capitalism and corruption in general. I’ve seen that she keeps her word. If Perry has this quality and it is in his record, I will be very pleased.

Keep in mind, words from the mouth of a politician during a campaign are highly unreliable in the absense of a record—a high score on the most important test.
