'Jewish' Bachmann is costing Romney ("fake Jew" Bachmann taking campaign money team Mitt covets!)
NY Post ^ | August 30, 2011 | JOSH MARGOLIN

Funny, she doesn't look Jewish.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is facing a new challenge: He's having trouble raising money from some Jewish donors who mistakenly believe one of his opponents, Michele Bachmann, is Jewish.

Some Jewish donors are telling fund-raisers for Romney, a Mormon, that while they like him, they'd rather open their wallets for the "Jewish candidate," who they don't realize is actually a Lutheran, The Post has learned.

"It's a real problem," one Romney fund-raiser said. "We're working very hard in the Jewish community because of Obama's Israel problem. This was surprising."

Like other Republicans, Romney is trying to capitalize on President Obama's waning support among Jewish voters, who are upset with his administration's policies toward Israel.

Romney moved to quickly position himself as an alternative to Obama among well-heeled Jewish contributors in places like New York, New Jersey, Florida and California -- a group Obama locked down in 2008.

Romney has been pushing the message that he is a common-sense, business-minded candidate who is a strong supporter of Israel.

The message was among the reasons he was atop the polls until last week, when Texas Gov. Rick Perry bested him in the latest surveys.

Now, with this latest hiccup among Jewish donors, some in Romney's camp have been wondering whether Bachmann and her allies are pushing the "Jewish" rumor to help their own fund-raising, sources said.

She has enjoyed strong popularity among Jewish voters and often talks about her stay on a kibbutz during the summer of 1974, when she was a teenager...

Romney is in a bit of panic. Most of his strategy circled around the money. This was not a helpful leak for Romney by any stretch. If the money weakens, Romney weakens. The cash and the enthusiasm are going to head over to Rick Perry.

Evangelicals are avid supporters of Israel and the Jewish people. That could be the reason for them calling her “The Jewish” candidate.

I like Bachman, and despise Romney, and neither has a thing to do with religion.

I agree, money (and a media that chooses to support him until he wins the nomination) were all he ever had going for him.

With absolutely no grassroots, his fundraising juggernaut made no sense - unless he was making lots of promises with our checkbook.

This leak labels potential Jewish financial supporters as morons who are too freaking stupid to bother to learn about the candidates, and then asking them to hand Mitty millions. Bachmann's Christianity is only mentioned (usually in a mocking context) about a million times a day in the mainstream media.

I can't wait until this idiot is politically finished. As a Republican anyway - I suspect he'll give it another go in the next election cycle as a Democrat.

He doesn't know how not to run for president, with that presidential hair and all.

A friend of mine lives in Florida, and he says he gets all kinds of solicitations by mail and phone from Jewish organizations, although he is not Jewish - because his name ends in "man".

It's likely that the marketers they hire just use a wildcard search like "*man" and develop their lists.

Only twits like Romney and Perry could come up with something like that.

I doubt that. They knew exactly what thet were doing. Politicians and their handlers will say anything if they think they can gain an advantage.

Personally, I think the Jewish Bachmann ploy will come back to haunt Romney. He apparently has no clue he’s labeling Jewish voters as stupid with that comment. The last thing a Jewish person wants to be thought of is stupid.

Doesn’t seem to bother Chuckie Shummer, though. Hmmm.

“Bachmann also told an AIPAC gathering earlier this year that she and her family make sure each year to attend at least one Jewish-theme play or movie.”

Hey, watching Yentl is close enough for me. Sorry, Mort Romnstein, you lost my vote!
