Those words, coined by James Carville as he was managing Bill Clinton's campaign for the presidency in 1992, encapsulate a basic axiom of practical politics, to wit: When the economy is hurting, it preoccupies voters, and politicians ignore it at their peril.
And that, in a nutshell, is why California's Democratic politicians are suddenly and publicly pledging concrete steps to improve the state's business climate.
California remains mired in its worst recession since the Great Depression, with its 12 percent unemployment the second highest in the nation, with well over 2 million idled workers, and with a drumbeat of complaints from business that it's hostile to job-creating investment.
Last week, Gov. Jerry Brown unveiled a proposal for business tax breaks that he said would restore business confidence. Thursday, the Legislature's two top Democrats stood with business leaders to announce legislation that they said would make regulatory rule-making more relevant and transparent.
Darrell Steinberg, the president pro tem of the state Senate, said it would "send a message to investors and employers that California is serious" and "put an end to the drumbeat that California is not friendly to business."
Not likely.
Republicans denounced it as tokenism and slapped Democrats for killing GOP business climate bills, while business executives saw it as merely a first step.

I wonder that when my son and daughter are adults (they’re babies now - under 5) when the state is 25% Anglo, will they be able to push to the head of the line at UCLA or Stanford...or be part of the protected classes afforded for 40 years by the former majority to then minority?

There was a story about young black kids in Los Angeles or Dallas (can’t recall) but they were literally 5% of a school of 1,000 Latino kids, nearly all from Mexico. They said they felt weird, left out and looked down upon as the teachers (mainly Latino) who favored them in class and they were excluded as many activities, both school and social, were in Spanish.
In about 20 years, those mean old KKK crackers that Van Jones and the Jackson-Lee/Sharpton crowd loves to hate will look awful good compared to their new Aztec majority.

Cal will need the equivalent of bankruptcy..ALL of those insane pensions and medical benefit deals to retires will have to be cut..by 40-50%...there is NO alternative...
I’m late to this thread but can identify with your story. Calif.-born around the same time as you, and the wife and I now talk about Texas, Missouri, etc.
Here’s hoping Texas worked out well for you and yours.

What about 2 simultaneous earthquakes one in Los Angeles and one in San Francisco that would each be 15 on the Richter scale, wiping out millions and millions of the blood-sucking liberals and the brain-dead morons on the dole. California would be cleansed and could start over.

Oh, I have, but they usually twist their heads sideways and give me that "huh?" look. They're really quite hopeless.
Then you should tell them IF socialism is so great, then why did the former Soviet bloc countries throw off the shackles of socialism in late 80’s/early 90’s after 40+ years of “OPM”, other people’s money?
