John Fund: Why Sarah Palin Is Not Running
Newsmax ^ | 09-02-11 | John Fund

Sarah Palin will swoop into Iowa and New Hampshire to speak at tea party rallies this Labor Day weekend, whipping up talk she will announce her candidacy for president. After all, this coming Saturday will mark the third anniversary of her acceptance speech for vice president at the Republican National Convention – a speech which established her as both a conservative icon and a magnet for criticism.

Her supporters are certainly encouraging talk she will be a 2012 candidate. Peter Singleton, her Iowa political organizer, told National Review’s Robert Costa last month: “I believe she will run. Labor Day will kick off the Republican campaign for the nomination. She is going to make a major, major speech.”

But Team Palin is extremely sensitive about anyone else who speculates about what she’s up to. Karl Rove, President Bush’s political strategist, told Fox News last month he thought Palin’s schedule in Iowa meant she would announce her candidacy this coming weekend. That prompted this riposte from Team Palin on the website of her PAC:

“Any professional pundit claiming to have ‘inside information’ regarding Governor Palin’s personal decision is not only wrong but their comments are specifically intended to mislead the American public.”

At the risk of being accused of misleading people, let me state that Sarah Palin isn’t running for president.

Makes as much sense as the 523 other theories.

I've gone through them all and I think I have it narrowed it down to three leading contenders:

She's announcing she's running this weekend.
She's announcing she's not running this weekend.
She's not announcing whether or not she's running this weekend.

There are other theories, of course, but I find them unconvincing and unsatisfying.

Well then I agree with her.

Me too.

Ma-lar-ky.

Fund and the rest of the clowns pouring out of the tiny punditmobile in the center ring of the Establishment Circus risk being trampled by a certain pink elephant from Alaska.

Fund seems to see only that which supports his own conclusion. A good example of that is his take on the Perry T-shirt wearing girls in the "Iowa Passion" video. Could that not just as easily be seen as proof of Palin's ability to excite and unite even supporters of her potential rival?

There's evidence to argue against a pending Perry endorsement. Palin said that she's still looking for a candidate whom she can "put her heart and soul behind"; and if that candidate didn't show up in "short order" she would be willing to put her name forward. She said that a candidate had to have been vetted, which we cannot say about Perry. She said these things after Perry entered the race. Also, Palin will reportedly go after "crony capitalism" in her speech tomorrow. She has an established record of fighting crony capitalism (in her own party!). Perry is a poster boy for crony capitalism, for goodness sake. One would think that these things would give Fund pause before making so public a prophecy.

This doesn’t sound like a Palin worshipper to me. You should at least be honest about your biases:

I’m not much of a Romney fan but Palin quit. She is not a politician now she is a public advocate and a great one and she should/will stay that way.

To what “later quotes” are you referring? The only Palin quotes Fund cites are from Greta’s show last year, and from the Iowa State Fair on August 12th. The quote Rintense posted was from August 18th.

WHACK! Thanks very much for the quotes!

Fund is an inside the Beltway hack and I’ve seen enough of him over the years to call him an idiot, because he’s more often wrong than right.

He’s a smug little bastard as well.

I knew about the book, also which makes him an impartial broker.

He’s no better than Ed Rollins...lol.

She did quit. So what. She is doing something else now and I like it. I’ve been a huge promoter all along. She does a great deal of good driving liberal media crazy, finding good conservative candidates and helping them overcome local party politics, this will eventually cleanse out the RINOs from the party. She has a killer instinct for who are the ‘good guys’ thats why I love her. Doesn’t mean I want her in the white house.

The desperation level for her not to run has gone completely off the scale. How many threads now up today on this theme? The lead astroturfers on that front are the perrykrishnas. Must be scared of tough competition and here was I thinking that apparently this is what your Primary system is all about! Ricky boy will only benefit from having Sarah knocking seven bells out of him and campaigning his ass into the deck.

We will have to disagree. I’ve seen him enough over the years to form my opinion. He’s more often wrong than right and he’s nothing but an inside the Beltway , smug, self righteous hack,

He has been wrong at times, but I again disagree when you call him a hack. His book on voter fraud by the dems—alone—takes him out of that category. He may be challenged morally based on previous behavior, but I have always believed he brought new insights to the table.

You’re right about Perry’s silence when she was attacked and singled out for the Tuson shooting. Deafening silence. I have serious concerns about the Governor of Texas, which I have written about today on another thread: namely that he’s a 27 year career politician, who’s likely to fit in all too well with the career fossil imcumbents in DC who are also used to making deals and I think we’ve had enough “reaching across the aisle” to last our life times.

We sure aren’t working our hearts out and our butts off to send Tea Party patriots to Congress only to have them sold out again by career politicians and this Governor from Texas is a former democrat to boot!

I’ll give you his due on voter fraud. He did an excellent job with that! IIRC, he came out of the mess with the unfortunate choice of women okay.

Dead right O. She specifically alluded to those who stood silent in the Newsweek article. She and Todd value loyalty and so far they got zero from those she stoood beside in 2010. They totally failed to step up and be counted in January when it counted most and hence blotted their copybook for good. Perry is just politics as usual crapola. Waste of time and effort.

A misquote of what Palin said about Iowa + Palin being photographed with someone wearing a pro-Perry T-shirt

That wasn’t a “photograph” it was a video that if you are watching flashes by so fast as to be unintelligible.

It is a video of her posing for a photograph with the Perry-shirted girls.

Sarah Palin is in an enviable position. She can jump in ANYTIME she chooses.

I've been through Jimmy Carter and then out of a dead economy into Reagan and a new beginning. I recall the MSM at that time saying Reagan was too old, too stupid, was nothing more than a good actor, etc. in order to discourage Reagan, and the electorate, that he had NO chance.

My point: Reagan made his announcement to run in NOVEMBER, only 12 months before the election.

For those that may not recall... Reagan WON 49 of the 50 states in that election and removed the plague of Jimmy Carter.

Sarah Palin is in DIRECT control of her own Destiny.

I believe SHE, more than anybody, knows this.

If Sarah does finally get in, she’ll be running from behind.

But, then, she loves a challenge.

We shall see.
