PEORIA — Ryder has canceled all truck rentals for the coming week due to credible but unconfirmed threats of terrorist attacks in the wake of the 10th anniversary of 9/11.
A customer who did not want to be identified told the Journal Star that she had been informed by Ryder of the cancellation by phone call Friday. A Ryder representative told the Journal Star all local rentals for the weekend had been canceled, though that person declined to elaborate on the reason.
Further questions were referred to the head of rentals for the local arm of the company. That person did not immediately return a request for an interview.
The customer was told by a Ryder representative in Peoria that the president of the company had decided to stop all truck rentals this week in the wake of the threats of terrorist attacks on the East Coast.
U.S. officials said Thursday they were investigating a credible but unconfirmed threat of a car bomb that may be used to target bridges or tunnels in New York City or Washington, D.C.
Neither U-Haul or Budget Truck Rental have any plans at this time to discontinue rentals in the area over the weekend, according to Peoria-area representatives reached by phone Friday afternoon.

IF someone has sold their property & are scheduled to move & have reserved a Ryder Truck for that purpose, what redress do they have, if any?
Try to rent from U-Haul or Budget? Or what?

Sounds like a doggone good idea, lock them all down.
U-haul would be next in line, after that terrorists could just find any parcel delivery storage yard such as UPS, florists, bread trucks etc and just steal them.
If I was a betting man I would put my money on train derailments. Doesn’t take much to achieve that.
All they have to do to cause us social and economic constriction is play a few rounds of telephone gossip. Talk about living rent free in people's heads.
My Wife and I have used Ryder Trucks to move a couple of times. IMO they are the Best self drive/move truck to use. It is to bad they will lose a lot of business.
At least not everyone in the country has gone insane.

Ryder is probably still sensitive to the fact Timothy McVeigh rented one of their trucks in carrying out the bombing in Oklahoma city.

Snips: Kansas City police have recovered nine box trucks that were stolen last weekend in a crime that briefly raised terrorism concerns because of the upcoming anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
The thieves' timing couldn't have been worse, with the trucks stolen a week before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, at a time of heightened awareness and concern about terrorism.
Maybe but the 9/11 hijackers all looked muslim to me. Even an airline ticket agent who sold two of them tickets said he was suspicious of them but didn’t want to “profile”. I say profile away.
