American translation: "...as he was forced to leap from a second floor window..." In Europe, and I think also in GB, the floors in a three-storey house would be called "ground floor, first floor, second floor" but in America it would be "first, second, third" floors. So breaking both legs on a leap from the first floor is a bit rougher than Americans might first believe.
Either that, or the guy landed very, very badly from not very high.
