CDC Takes Closer Look at Gardasil and Paralysis (Bachmann is right

Phil Tetlock and Barbara Mellers were in a race against time to save their 15-year-old daughter, Jenny. As I reported last summer, Jenny developed a degenerative muscle disease nearly two years ago, soon after being vaccinated against the cervical-cancer-causing HPV. She became nearly completely paralyzed, though her mind was perfectly intact and she could still enjoy her pet parakeet, Hannah Montana, and Twilight.

I've been E-mailing Phil regularly over the past year, and up until our last E-mail, one week ago, he had been holding out hope that they would be able to find a cure for his daughter—or to at least determine if the human papillomavirus vaccine called Gardasil had caused his daughter's illness, most likely a juvenile form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (aka Lou Gehrig's disease). Sadly, the clock ran out last Sunday, and Jenny passed away.

This is much ado about nothing

That's not what was being reported. If you had a daughter and she was mandated to take it, how would you have dealt with that?

I don't have a problem with vaccines that have been on the market for over ten years. As a parent, I want to know the history of any medication or vaccines before I give them to my child.

For the record, I like Perry but this is a sticking point with me. And no matter who I eventually vote for, I would hope all information is brought up about them and debated. I don't ever want to support a candidate that didn't have his past examined.

Saying that, I don't expect any candidate to be 100% perfect and if Perry did screw up, I want to say, yeah, he screwed up and I didn't like what he did but I still support the guy because I believe he is the best person running for the job.

The law was never passed mandating this vaccine. You are beating a dead horse.

My complete post said:Gardasil is not proven. I posted a thread some time ago with links. The FDA approved it for 9 year olds before the trials had even begun in Japan. They have no idea how long the vaccine lasts nor what side affects, if any, happen over time or after puberty.

More links like the flimsy, activist like, baseless ones

When this was posted, there WERE no blogs about Gardasil.

Two studies were posted directly from Mercks site. The one done in Brazil on 16 to 23 year olds. Again, the Japan study on 9 year olds hadn't even begun when it was approved. THAT info was from MERCK itself.

The other links were all from the CDC.

CDC Cervical Cancer Statistics

Cervical cancer used to be the leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States. However, in the past 40 years, the number of cases of cervical cancer and the number of deaths from cervical cancer have decreased significantly. This decline largely is the result of many women getting regular Pap tests, which can find cervical precancer before it turns into cancer

CDC What are the signs, symptoms and potential health problems of HPV?

Most people with HPV do not develop symptoms or health problems from it. In 90% of cases, the body’s immune system clears HPV naturally within two years.

It's late. I will now bid you a goodnight.

retardation is only one of several outcomes for those that take vaccines and have a reaction...it includes coma, paralysis and brain disorders....for some death....for some worse than death....

At over $300 for the shots, using the existing laws to shift the costs from families that could not afford the meds to the insurance companies allowed for nearly universal access to cancer preventing medication. What part of that do you disapprove of?

Where do insurance companies get their money? Obamacare is all about 'universal access' as well.

actually, oral polio vaccines and the smallpox vaccine are both dangerous. Oral polio vaccine in one out of 20 thousand cases evolves back to regular polio virus in the child’s intestines,,, and so every year there were a dozen cases of polio, mainly in moms or grandparents who hadn’t received the vaccine. (it is a problem in Africa when they stop giving the vaccine and then restart it: Lots of unvaccinated kids could catch it)> That’s why your kid now has to get a polio shot instead of a sugar cube.

As for Smallpox, a small percentage of folks end up with the virus infecting their ecsema if the scratch it, but the main danger is if your immune system is bad, from cancer or a similar disease. In that case, you can actually die of the vaccinia virus infection. (half a dozen cases a year way back when)....

Once Smallpox was wiped out, they stopped giving it because the problems were worse than the chance of catching it, except if you are in the military, where the possibility of germ warfare is a real danger.

but it’s a cost benefit ratio: a tiny chance of problems versus the higher chance of getting sick.

The vaccine paranoid types are simply too young to remember when these diseases threatened folks.

When I worked in Africa 30 years ago, I saw polio, tetanus, hepatitis, typhoid, cholera, measles deaths, and whooping cough deaths, but only older docs, like my 80 year old husband, have seen smallpox (he worked in Mindanao as a public health doc in the 1950’s).

So if you visit family overseas, don’t forget your “routine” shots....

So does the ‘we the people’ government have vaccination clinics all along our borders? Why is there NO sense of urgency to make sure that every person that comes into this nation is vaccinated?

actually, you have to get the shot to immigrate. Illegals have been known to bring in whooping cough and measles (although most Mexican kids do get the shots).

The last few outbreaks of mealses in the CDC reports seem to be from adults whose shots were out of date or who didn’t get them as kids, traveling back to their home countries and catching it from someone there.

and of course, whooping cough, mumps, and chicken pox goes around all the time but is usually mild...a lot of bad coughs after “viral bronchitis” in adults is probably mild whooping cough since the vaccine wore off...they are debating if they should start giving the vaccine to adults now

and mumps is also mild...unless you are a grown man and get orchitis from mumps...ouch.

Not all illegals coming in from Mexico are Mexican. Is there a 'new' concern about TB floating around in the medical community?

She did. there is no way to sugar coat it.

there is a big concern in the medical community about drug resistant TB coming in from Africa (most Mexican cases are drug sensitive).

The HIV crisis has something to do with it: IF you have a low WBC level, you can’t fight off the infection, so you are at risk of becoming an active case of TB again.

And when I worked with Native Americans, we had to re do our TB skin tests and give preventive antibiotics to our diabetic patients, who also were at risk for relapsing.

It’s a problem, but not for the general population.

I thank you for the information. I asked that question because in the past month at a physical exam for a 9 year old, the MD asked if there had been any TB exposure. No explanation given as to how or where one would know if they had been exposed.

This revisionist history crap is driving me nuts.

People are looking at the situation NOW and saying, "There have been 50 million doses given and it is, largely, safe."

But when Perry signed the order the vaccine had only been tested on (I believe) about 8,000 girls/women. If I remember correctly, there were very few test subjects in the 12 YO range.

Look at all the drug recalls. It seems like a big new drug is pulled off the shelves about once a year. The FDA can mandate all the testing that it wants to, but the BIG test comes when the drug is released to the general public.

At the time we didn't know. Many of us parents felt like Perry was experimenting on our daughters and it was terrifying. Those of us who have daughters that are already immuno-compromised were really scared.

As far as the opt out situation goes: NOW there is a medical exemption for girls like my daughter with known problems, but back then there was no way to do it. Heck, even now, the way the exemption is phrased, there's no way for a parent to opt their child out of one vaccine and still give them vaccines that they know are safe. It's an all-or-nothing proposition. (So I can't opt my daughter out of Gardasil and still get her MMR.)

People who say that this is much ado about nothing are forgetting what we (and Perry) knew about Gardasil when he signed that order.

“”You seem to be under the misapprehension that the FDA and others do not do follow up safety studies””

I don’t think that it’s me suffering from misapprehension. Aren’t all drugs tested and safety trials run?

There aren’t bad drugs on the market causing damage and death? Wasn’t Thalidomide tested AND taken from the market? Yeah -I’m old enough to remember that. Males as young as 9 years old are susceptible to cervical cancer?

The FDA and the CDC are infallible? Too much case history that proves otherwise. I prefer not to put my life or my family’s in their hands.

That’s my thinking. I don’t think my girls will be sexually active for awhile, and it gives us time to see what the side-effects really are.

I’ve talked to my girls about it. I told the one that doesn’t have a brain injury that she should probably get it, but I’m hoping she can wait until she’s an adult.

I’m not sure about my daughter with a brain injury, so we’ll just wait and see how things are in a few years.

“I thought Bachmann claimed mental retardation.”

Bachmann quoted what a mom told her.

Something LIKE mental retardation must have happened to make the mom use that term, and it happened soon after the Gardisil vaccination.
