Tacoma Teachers Defy Court Order, Vote To Continue Strike By Patrick Oppmann, CNN September 15, 2011

A judge ruled Wednesday afternoon that teachers must halt their strike Since Monday, some 28,000 kids have been forced to stay home from school.

Teachers in Tacoma, Washington, have voted to continue their strike, in defiance of a a court order to stop.

Rich Wood, the spokesman for the Tacoma teachers union, said teachers voted Thursday to continue their strike despite a judge's Wednesday order. At a union meeting Thursday afternoon, 1,478 teachers voted to keep striking, Wood said, adding that 107 voted "no" or abstained. He said teachers were concerned about how Judge Bryan Chushcoff would react to their defying his order. The Tacoma School District did not return a call seeking comment, but a message posted on the district's website said school for 28,000 students would be suspended again Friday, as it has been for the rest of the week. Chushcoff's order on Wednesday was in a case the district brought against the striking teachers and their union.

After the ruling, District Superintendent Art Jarvis said he expected teachers to return to work while the union and school district continued stalled contract negotiations. At the time of the ruling, a hearing was scheduled for Friday to ensure the union complied with the judge's order.

I’m sure plenty of qualified people are available to fill their positions. They have no interest in working, fire them.

This is a no brainer. Pull a Reagan. Let them know their services are no longer needed. Wouldn’t take that long to hire replacements.

I don’t know why anyone would be surprised. Generally speaking, leftists only follow the law when it suits their purposes. If they can’t get the legislature to do what they want, they try executive orders, rules, and regulations. If they can’t get the executive branch to do their will, they run to the courts. If they can’t get the courts to agree, they simply ignore the rulings. This isn’t just an opinion, it can be proven and is proven regularly, this article being the most recent case. Leftists, in general, are immoral people, and immoral people generally do whatever they please.

As a national average, 87%of america's teachers come from the bottom 20% of their graduating class in college.

The students should be striking for more qualified teachers in their places.

I remember reading that even though it is expressly illegal for school teachers to strike in Washington state, there is an informal agreement among the membership of the WEA (Washington Education Association) for one district to strike each fall.

This has been going on for six or seven years now. A different district each year. All wildcat strikes. All officially “non-sanctioned” by the union but all receiving unofficial support.

And the law may fret but they let it go each time.

General John Wilson Sprague probably rues the day he chose Tacoma as the terminus for the Northern Pacific Railroad with idiots like these Union teachers inheriting the prosperity he desired for the area.

This happens frequently in Washington. The next step is that the judge will start fining the teachers for every day they miss class (like $100 a day). Then they will go back to work.

You know how things operate here in Washington well. Missed the part though about the fines being suspended as part of the agreement to go back to work.

They won’t pay and they won’t go to jail, and the DA will forgive the debt. It’s all farce.

Sure do. It was a wonderful thing to behold. I have no respect for the public school system or for those that work in it. Not to say they are all bad. All you have to do is look at the product they turn out year in and year out. I’ve seen dogs more intelligent than the average public school student.

This strike though is small potatoes compared to what I think is coming to Washington when the Boeing Machinist contract expires in 2012. They never learn, and I suspect they will use Boeing’s huge backlog of orders against the company. The better the company is doing the longer the strike has been the general rule.
