Perry on TARP support: No 'Ma'am'
Politico ^ | 09/16/11 | Ben Smith

After an appearance in Newton, Iowa today, Rick Perry denied to an unidentified woman that he'd ever supported the 2008 bank bailout known as TARP.

"No Ma'am," he told her.

"I thought I saw a letter where you had written encouraging the support of TARP legislation," he persisted.

"You saw wrong," he replied flatly, as shown in this video, taken by a tracker, of this morning's event.

This isn't the first time the issue has come up, and the questioner might be excused for having read Perry's October 1 letter that way. The letter, co-signed by then-Gov. Joe Manchin in their capacities as heads of the RGA and DGA, came three days after TARP's failure to pass the House rocked the markets.

The AP covered the letter with the headline, "Governors, Business Up Pressure for Bailout Bill." It's very hard to read otherwise.

"We strongly urge Congress to leave partisanship at the door and pass an economic recovery package," they wrote. "It is time for Washington, D.C. to step up, be responsible, an do what's in the best interest of American taxpayers and our economy."

Perry, later that day, released a statement that seemed aimed at countering the impression left by his letter without clarifying what he was calling for: "[G]overnment should not be in the business of using taxpayer dollars to bail out corporate America. Congress needs to take off its partisan gloves and work together to bring both short and long term stability to the credit markets....”

Don’t forget Perry strapping “young innocent girls” to tables and injecting them with the “retarded” shot. /sarcasm

This letter says absolutely nothing.

Pretty typical of most of Perry's proclamations. At least he is consistent.

What’s it about then? It certainly doesn’t prove the Perry was pro-TARP.

I proved that Sarah Palin was pro-TARP, though, even after it was passed.

A distinction without a difference, on what date and time was the term tarp used, it was after the economics recovery plan was passed.

Hey, it’s the liberal troll.

Still putting together that big class action lawsuit against Rick Perry and Merck over Gardisil, Matlock?

Actually TARP was an amendment attached to the bill. But it was still all the same bill.

it was after the economics recovery plan was passed.

I noticed that you said "the" economics recovery plan. You clearly used a definite article. That's quite different from "an" economic recovery plan, which is indefinite.

Words mean something. Well, they did when I was in school.

I would think the people against Perry would be more worried about him strapping "young innocent children" down to tables and injecting them with the "retarded" shot. That's much more damaging!!!!!!!!! /s

Sarah, stood by her Man...nothing wrong with that and never denied....

This thread is about integrity, if you can not come away from that letter thinking that either it was intended for TARP not sure what he would want passed then....lol

But I am not here to convert you from him, no no no just making sure others who may choose him are well aware...yep yep yep!~

You were talking to the right person! org.whodat has big plans of a class-action lawsuit against Rick Perry for his EO that never went into effect and against Merck for giving Texans the retard shot! All he's missing is some actual data, a lawyer to fund the suit, and reality!

Really though, in the SAFE thread on the Front Page sidebar, org.whodat talked about doing this. Quite the "conservative" isn't he? I wonder what his thoughts were when Sarah Palin was getting served with baseless lawsuits? What say you, org.whodat/Matlock?

I walk away from much of Perry’s correspondence thinking that he often has as much trouble with the definition of “is” that Billy Jeff did.

Exactly. This letter could mean that Manchin and Perry wanted Congress to buy everyone a box of popcorn.

Either way, the letter does not help Perry. Either he and Manchin were beseeching Pelosi to pass TARP or something TARP-like; or they were sending a letter that basically said "blah, blah..."

I would not use a democrat coming to your candidates defense as a defense....lol

Read the AP article and the letter and the video speak to the sane quite well thanks.

Unlike you using an AP headline to post yet another misleading smear against Rick Perry?

What are your comments on Sarah Palin’s TARP support, which are obvious, clear, and in her own words? Or, are we just going to ignore that fact?

What bill? You’re reading something that isn’t in the letter.

Of the two, the only person who undeniably supported TARP was Sarah Palin, not Rick Perry.

What a backfire. LOL

The same could be said of his healthcare letter to Hillary. The Clinton's love of socialized medicine was no secret. You have to wonder WTH was he thinking was going to come of Hillary's efforts except what we got???

That settles that: Rick Perry will lie right to your face.

I've got McCain feelings about this guy.

They are? The entire leftwing apparatus, including the liberal wing of the GOP has thrown everything including the kitchen sink at Perry since he got into the race.

The die hards on the left are going after Perry hard. There is one lawyer in Texas that will spend huge amounts of money bashing Perry. His name is Steve Mostyn. Right now groups he funds are spending big bucks on google ads pushing a site called twiatruth.com. The google ad can be seen on sites like this one.

This is driven by trial lawyers. Mostyn is the main guy behind this. He is a piece of work. He heavily funded and supported Bill White when he ran against Rick Perry for gov. So Mostyn is after Perry again.

The tort reform issues in Texas that Perry pushed will chill a lot of the trial lawyers across the US. They are going to spend a lot of money against Perry.

Ya the MSM is reporting that he is so much more electable than say Gov Palin.

This makes zero sense! One of the reasons the left hates Sarah is because she is a pro life God fearing Christian woman, who questions the science of global warming, is against abortion (as all real Christians are), does not believe in evolution etc.

And yet we are to believe according to the MSM/REP polls that the left likes this about Perry?

They are going to hate Perry just as much as Gov Palin if not more.

Gov Palin is the genuine article, Perry is only saying what he thinks he is required to say to get the nomination.
