WASHINGTON (AP) The number of violent crimes fell by a surprising 12 percent in the United States last year, a far bigger drop than the nation has been averaging since 2001, the Justice Department said.
The Bureau of Justice Statistics reported there were 3.8 million violent crimes last year, down from 4.3 million in 2009.
Experts aren't sure why. The expectation had been that crime would increase in a weak economy with high unemployment like that seen in 2010.

Not sure why?
Holder’s people all got a pass and walked.
All illegal alien criminals got a pass and walked.
Simple answer. There are fewer males between the ages of 18-37. They commit most of the violent crimes.
“All illegal alien criminals got a pass and walked.”
Yep. Standing outside a polling place with a club threatening people USED to get you thrown in jail.
I don’t suppose it has anything to do with a pretty significant increase in the number of people carrying concealed weapons . . .
Nah, criminals aren’t smart enough to realize that their victim might just refuse to be a victim . . . or maybe . . .
Funny, I keep reading about all these mobs of Amish yoots wilding.
I don’t think refusing to enforce our laws can really be considered as a drop in crime.
Even if the statistics don’t prove that more guns equal less crime, it’s pretty clear that they do prove that more guns does not equal more crime. The anti-gunners said that we would see blood in the streets once we started letting people carry guns. That obviously has not happened.
bang bang, violent thugs dead....that is the answer
Now the violent thugs are afraid to go out at night.
Ummm. THis must be a lie. Mayor Michael “Bonehead” Bloomberg has said that low unemployment is going to lead to riots. Unless this liberal WANTS riots for some reason and it’s going to be liberals rioting on the “US Day of Rage”.
Peeps behavin demselves for some obama money?
And a lot of concealed carry folks. The bad guys don’t know who is carrying and who isn’t!
There was an actual headline: “Despite drop in crime, gun permits up.”
“...significant increase in the number of people carrying concealed weapons . . .”
You got it.
Violent crime has not dropped 12%, so don’t bother looking for explanations. This will turn out to be due to either a change/screw-up in reporting procedures or a bureaucratic redefinition of what counts as a verified “violent crime”.
Yeah, that is probably why a lot of criminals in the Dallas, Tx are targeting the 80 to 90 year old folks.
Nope. Violent crime has been dropping for many years now. There are other factors at work, some mentioned in this thread (more citizens legally armed, demographics, etc).
And while half the country does vote for Democrats, the general attitude towards crime has been generally much tougher over the last couple decades. We incarcerate criminals at a fairly high rate and the public simply isn't as tolerant of criminals as it was in the 60's and 70's (when the thinking was to rehabilitate rather than punish). 3 strikes laws, for example, were a response by the citizenry (through their legislatures) to liberal judges; mandatory sentencing and stronger sentencing guidelines also followed due to angry citizens demanding these new laws from their elected representatives.
Twelve percent year on year during a recession? I know that the trend has been downwards but it doesn’t seem plausible that it would suddenly decline so steeply right now.
Two things ~ demographics and the expectation that the victim may be armed and dangerous!
Thinkin’ the same thing......first, LOTs more people carrying concealed, and second, look at firearms sales and ammo since O even looked like he was gonna win - the nation’s believers in the 2nd Amendment are more armed than ever.
Could be that we’ve just begun to fight back against the bad guys and they know it......
As I said, there are many different factors - some mentioned on this thread. One major point is simply that America's attitude and policy changes towards crime beginning in the 80's is continuing to bear fruit. I am not going to argue that this particular statistic is perfectly accurate, only pointing out that the crime rate has been going down for years across much of the nation and this report isn't surprising considering the trend.
You know we are doing something right when the MSM is baffled by it. One of the funniest headlines I've seen fairly regularly in such rags as the NY Times and WaPo goes as follows:
Crime rate continues to drop despite record incarceration rates.
The left still can't figure out that being tough on crime and jailing criminals actually reduces crime. The establishment intellectuals are still stuck in the 60's, but most Americans simply demand their representatives be tough on criminals - even the Democrats they vote for. It was one of those shifts that the Democratic party largely was forced to go along with (much as they've dumped gun control).
Nobody has guessrd it.
2009 14 million guns sold. Ammo shortages and price increases.
2010 14.8 million guns sold. Ammo problems are severe
The bad guys no longer see the opportunities they once had.
Or a lesser percentage.
Believe it or not, Bill Clinton brought this up in one of his addresses. At the time I imagined I would be the only person in the US paying attention to that. I may have been right.
