NTSB briefing going on now...

Two deaths at the hospital plus seven more on the tarmac for a total of nine, including the pilot.

Have found a part from the tail and will be analyzing it. The area has been secured for recovery of debris.

Looking for all video/photographs available.

I hate hearing that nine died, however, when I first saw the video, I was really afraid we’d be talking about a hundred.

I only entered the discussion after seeing other comments. I am still trying to determine how it was possible for me to get incorrect information, although not directly, from people I know were on the ground at the scene. I will know more when my friends return from Reno and I can talk to them directly.

You probably think I made the the whole thing up, but you would be wrong. I still stand by my contention that in this case it was better to withhold the name pending confirmation.

Divulging the name would only served to fan the flames of the rumor mill.

A World War II-era plane crashed at a West Virginia air show and burst into flames on Saturday, though officials did not immediately know of any injured spectators.

The crash comes a day after a stunt pilot in Nevada crashed at an air show there, killing nine.

A coworker of mine was there watching the races. She had been there all week and was near the impact of this unfortunate incident. This is what she said in her email ....

“The crash occurred about 500 feet from where we were sitting and I’ve never seen anything that horrible. As the planes were making there first lap, we saw The Grey Ghost pull up right above us in a typical “mayday” move. I was filming the race as the planes came past us and saw the Galloping Ghost pull up at an impossible angle, and then it turned end-over-end and then was heading, nose down, right at us. It looked like the pilot was doing everything he could do to get it away from the stands before he hit the ground right at the front of the box seats. Once he hit, the plane just disappeared. No smoke, no fire.”

Not sure if this adds anything to the conversation, but I thought I’d throw that in as an eyewitness report that was close to being one of the victims.

In the video from the angle looking to the right of the operator it is clear the aircraft is shaking. Several witnesses reported the engine was hunting. I think that was just propeller harmonics has the roll commenced. It is clear it went into the asphalt with the engine running either full out or close to it.

I posted this vid to another thread last night. It doesn't show the crash, but it does show the plane coming out of the corner, just prior to the crash, in a huge barrel roll... Not being a pilot, I wonder if this footage helps to explain the event?

I hope you are right, but the my source, although not confimed leads me to believe it is not a joke. I know that many on here are frustrated that we will not reveal the name. We are also very frustrated that we have been unable to confirm. If it turns out to be true am am sure those that wanted to know will understand why we wanted to be sure.

I am hearing directly from people who were there now.
One will be visiting the doctor tomorrow to see about his leg pain, no visible injury.
Another is on his way down to visit, says several persons right next to him were killed instantly, he only got a scratch on his hand!
All happened too fast for reactions to matter, it was just luck for who lived and died.

Press release last night was not very forthcoming, they HAD to know the body count is much higher than they revealed.
Media now saying eleven dead.
Impact resembled a bomb going off, same type of shrapnel injuries, some pieces large enough for severe bodily trauma. (Not going to get as graphic as what I have been told, it was gruesome)

Plane DID impact “In” the box-seat area, not thirty yards away as some reports stated.

Truly a suck situation for all concerned.

Seems the photo’s will probably be more valuable to investigators than the wreckage, plane is basically powder.

Jimmy Leeward was 74, not 80. He was an experience pilot who flew in many air shows and in several movies. He lived in Ocala, FL and is well known in the aviation community here.

You refer to the plane being on it’s first lap.....

EVERY other witness account & according to 3 people I personally talked to today at a horse race who were also there, the planes were on their third lap of 7 of a qualifying heat.
