White House serves up home-brewed beer

WHEN former Marine Sg. Dakota Meyer joined President Barack Obama for a beer on the White House patio this week, the Medal of Honor recipient was treated to a homemade brew, a White House food blog said today.

Obama Foodorama, a blog that describes itself as "The Blog of Record About White House Food Initiatives," said the beer is known as White House Honey Blonde Ale and is made with equipment purchased out of the Obama's own pocket, according to a spokeswoman for First Lady Michelle Obama.

The President and Mrs Obama first served about 80 bottles of White House brew to guests attending a Super Bowl party earlier this year.

The honey ale's signature ingredient is a pound of honey harvested from the White House beehive, according to the blog. The First Family's chefs have also brewed up a honey porter.

White House curator Bill Allman said the Obamas are the first to make a brew at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

"We have no record of beer brewing at the White House," Mr Allman told Obama Foodorama, although the blog does say George Washington was known to brew his own in pre-White House days at Mount Vernon.

Pretty cool. Obama just moved up a notch in my book. That would put him at notch 1.

They hired a brewmaster with our money and paid him $250,000 a hear to make a keg a month.

I’m double batching as I type this. The Old Chico Wheat is cooling and the 60 Shilling is mashing happily away.

Cheers,

unless it’s changed, 200 gallons per household a year is the limit ( 100 gals per adult).

Let’s keep tabs...

I sincerely doubt Barry’s the one cleaning and sanitizing those 80 bottles . . . or the equipment that goes with home brewing. It’s good to be the king.

I'm hooked on double batching lately.  an extra 2 hours gives you twice the brew.  Win/Win.

The Wheat beer is in Carboys now and I am mashing out the 60 Shilling.

Cheers,

This is a do-it-yourself version of Billy Beer. Obama will market the beer for his campaign. Notice it was mentioned several times that it was his own equipment.

Is the White House zoned to sell beer for profit?
