Dont make me laugh. She is the end of their PC business? The other guy was going to get rid of the business altogether.

Guess You didn’t see the full page ad in the WSJ last week where HP stated that they weren’t selling the PC Business, but rather spinning it off as a stand alone HP Computers Company so it can respond and develope technology faster and better........Oh Well!!! We will see...

I’ve got HP’s and Compaqs too, and never a problem (except for one dead battery after 8 years, and the computer seems to have compensated for it and found another way to keep time). It’s strange to read such wrath against HP. My oldest is about 15 years old now and still works just fine.

I totally agree that the board is dysfunctional and that Meg is just proof of that malady.

However, their computer lines are good value for the money, performance and reliability and support-ability-wise. Dell has sewed up the big corporations and the government, good on them, but good ole' HP powers small business.

Probably the reason you are having trouble is you don't have a local support person. That guy can get the drivers from HP or MS, decrappify and set up the system, and have it running for years with no problem. If you are a home user, don't try to do it yourelf, just as you should not attempt to tune up your car. Neither take kindly to amateurs.

I have nothing against Meg Whitman and she may very well be a competent executive. But having made a major error in judgement in selecting the last CEO, one would think that the HP board would see the need to do a thorough, extensive search for his replacement since the company’s future may well rest on it. At the end of the day they may well have chosen Whitman. They may have chosen someone else. But at least it wouldn’t look like a hasty, panicked decision.

I guess this means Carly Fiorina will take over ebay

I work for HP and no, it hasn’t been 7 or 8 CEOs since 1999. It just seems that way. Carly Fiorina replaced Lew Platt in 1999. Mark Hurd replaced Fiorina in 2006 (iirc). Leo Apotheker replaced Hurd last year. I’m too shell-shocked to make an assessment of Whitman. We didn’t have layoffs or offshoring at this company until Hurricane Carly hit, and HP was consistently one of the top 10 places to work. Not after Carly. Hurd took layoffs and offshoring — sorry, it’s “best shoring” now — to an art form. Apotheker was barely here long enough to find the Men’s room. I’m scared of whoever this BoD brings in.

Yup, I guess I'm just a sexist ....

Your comment certainly was sexist.

There are many ways to criticize an executive. To comment that a female executive would probably redecorate is sexist.

That’s a legitimate position. Saying she’ll first redecorate is not.

I don’t know...I like the couple of HP’s I’ve bought. It could be I just got lucky. But I’m sure every computer has its detractors. I checked into Dell and Apple etc...but I liked the HP models fit better what I was looking for. I am aware the company’s business model is a mess though, I don’t count on a lifetime guarentee from this place.

Don’t panic. If you lose you job there, Obummer has unemployment up to 1144 weeks. Hopefully in 22 years you will be able to retire.

Spin offs usually are sold and/or independently operated.

That's Agilent, not HP.

Of course, thirty years ago it was H-P.

Back in the late 60's, our lab supervisor showed me a cute trick having to do with the H-P logo. HP had just bought a company that made lab power supplies, named Dynetics. The logo on the front said "dy," but if you turned the PS upside down, it was the traditional "hp." Cute.

But for scopes, you hadda go with Tektronix. I've used everything from a 512 up to the TDS2024B sitting between my keyboard and my monitor.

Heh - Unemployment in Georgia doesn’t pay a living wage. It’s something like $350/week MAX — certainly not enough to entice someone to sit around in their underwear eating Cheetos and watching Jerry Springer reruns instead of looking for another job...OOPS! Obummer has taken care of that, too! There aren’t any!

I don’t mean “living wage”, because unemployment is not WORK, therefore it’s not “wages”. I’m just sayting that before taxes (yes, you pay taxes on unemployment), that comes to only about $16,800/year. That won’t support two people, even if they’re living very modestly.
