I don’t think it can get any worse. I would have written that response much differently.
The question is can he salvage it and make it better. I am not sure which way that might go. The killing of Bin Laden is now almost irrelevant just a few months after it happened - so I tend not to think any one single event will be totally determinative. And FTR, he did not say racists. As an accomplished writer, I am sure that you possess the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way as to make them look forward to the journey. That is pretty much what Perry did here.
