Shock : Herman Cain wins GOP Florida straw poll
The Washington Times ^ | SEPTEMBER 23, 2011 | Seth McLaughlin

ORLANDO — Former Godfather Pizza CEO Herman Cain won the Presidency 5 straw poll here Saturday, delivering a blow to Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s frontrunner status and a victory for a candidate who has struggled to transform his grassroots popularity into strong showings in national polls.

“Tonight’s winner is Herman Cain,” Florida Gov. Rick Scott announced. “It shows you something, the road to the White House come through Florida, and it pays to spend time here.”

He received 37 percent of the more than 2,600 votes cast.

“Thank you to the Republican voters for this incredible honor of being named the winner of the Presidency 5 straw poll in Florida today,” Mr. Cain said. “This is a sign of our growing momentum and my candidacy that cannot be ignored. I will continue to share my message of ‘common-sense solutions’ across this country and look forward to spending more time in Florida, a critical state for both the nomination and the general election.”

The two national frontrunners — Mr. Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — placed second and third. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, meanwhile, landed in fourth place; Rep. Ron Paul of Texas landed in fifth place; and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, sixth. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann finished last. (See the poll results here.)

Does anyone know what his stand on the border is?

Herman Cain on Immigration

We have a path to citizenship: it's called legal immigration. (Aug 2011)

Not right to sue Arizona for trying to protect themselves. (Jun 2011)

Secure our borders; enforce our laws. (May 2011)

The MSM is busy proclaiming the death of Perry. Why is Romney’s 3rd place finish not a headliner?

Bad math andyk!

When all my payroll tax is gone, my top tax bracket drops from 35 to 9, my capital gains and dividend taxes are zero,
I can buy 3 times as much stuff as now with the 9% national sales tax included.

Here we have a former Federal Reserve chairman who wants to add a national sales tax on top of the income tax, and thinks it can’t possibly go wrong

I see your point and it worries me a little too. But, as with most tax overhaul policies, the devil will be in the details. One thing for sure we can't go on as a first world country with our current tax system, and the threats of tax rates expiring every year or so unless congress acts. We need some transparent stable tax code and maybe Cain's plan is a good start. He's the only one who's talking about a serious overhaul (well besides Rue Paul and that man is scary).

Probably because he didn’t participate in the straw poll, as opposed to Perry who gave his all. I believe Mitt was put on the ballot because of the debate there yesterday, or so I read.

Adding a national sales tax on top of an income tax is a RINO dream come true.

Please provide a source for your claim that he wants a national sale tax in addition to the income tax.

Advocating we do nothing but cling to our current corrupt failed tax system is a Democrat Partybot dogma. Seems you came to the wrong website.

With which math are you disagreeing? I cannot believe that you think it is a good idea to introduce a national sales tax on top of an income tax.

Surely you remember the top rate of the income tax when it was introduced. I should not be surprised that you support Cain with your screen name.

Let’s support him then. FReepers are tired of the “base” be it right or left. Let’s make a difference. I will love to see the heads explode when he has the gravitas to take the Racist Plantation Democrats head on.

I thought his 9-9-9 plan had a 9% income tax, a 9% national sales tax, and a 9% corporate tax.

No instead you think doing nothing and clinging to our current corrupted, failed tax system is a good idea.

I cannot believe with your private sector background you would stake out such a fundamentally indefensible position

I like this outcome. If Palin endorses Cain, he's my pick.

Absolutely fantastic. All Cain needs is the perception that he “can” win and he will do some serious damage.

“He could be this generation’s Ronald Reagan.”

That’s one thing I do love about him. His message (OUR message) is getting through. For some reason he says things in a way that makes sense to people.

The Tax Code is abolished. 9 percent of a drug dealers take sounds better than 0 percent.

Andy, my federal tax bill runs right around 20%-22% every year. That is on TOP of social security payroll tax and
medicare tax. If all those get eliminated per Herman’s plan,
why should I not be happy paying 9% national sales tax?

Besides, sales tax applies only to stuff I buy. Which is no
where near 100% of my income. Which means I will have more
money leftover for additional investing.

That is it. In Tennessee we get hit pretty good but the skin in the game makes it playable.

The MSM is busy proclaiming the death of Perry. Why is Romney’s 3rd place finish not being proclaimed as an epic fail?

My opinion is that the Eatablishment / MSM does not view Cain as a serious threat to Romney. So they celebrate this win by Cain of some half-arsed politico straw poll of a couple thousand people because it promotes the theme that Perry is dead, which they believe can only help Romney. Now, maybe they are wrong but I think there is some logic to their approach. I think the real story here is that despite Perry’s debate fiasco, Romney could still only muster a 3rd place finish.

If you support a national sales tax on top of our current income tax system, don't be afraid to say so. The income tax is immoral. I guess it was about 13 years ago I came to the wrong website - how about you?
