My mother worked for the government for 35 years and had her retirement and health benefits until she passed at age 91. As the Executor of the Estate, I contacted the government and sent in the death certificate. They continued paying her benefits for several months and I left the money in the bank. After 3 months they very effeciently took the money out of the account and was returned to the government. I wonder if the numbers they are throwing about are gross or net numbers being paid to the dead.

I wonder if the numbers they are throwing about are gross or net numbers being paid to the dead. Good question. I wonder how many recipients did not inform the agency of the death of the legimate payee, and how many did but the agency just didn't process it. My experience with "benefits" departments in all kinds of companies/agencies is that they don't give a flying freep how much they mess up.
