Obama faces a white flight
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | September 27, 2011 | By Melissa Harris-Perry

Electoral racism in its most egregious form is the unwillingness of whites to vote for blacks regardless of qualifications or ideology. So far, Barack Obama has been involved in two elections that suggest such racism is no longer operative. His reelection bid, however, may indicate that a more insidious form of racism has replaced it.

The 2004 Illinois Senate race between Obama and Alan Keyes, two African Americans, was a unique test of old-fashioned electoral racism. For a truly committed racist, neither would have been acceptable.

In 2008, the long primary battle between Hillary Clinton and Obama added hundreds of thousands of Democrats to the rolls. By October, it was clear that Obama could lose the general election only if many of these Democrats failed to turn out or crossed party lines - which, after eight years of Bush, could be interpreted only as electoral racism.

The 2012 election is a test of whether Obama will be held to standards never before imposed on an incumbent. If he is, it may be the triumph of a more subtle form of racism.

People vote their lunch pails. Obama has stolen them from everyone and people will not vote for him because they have no jobs. It's simple and no amount of speeches, fund raisers, threats, anger and belittling will get unemployed people to vote for him.
With unemployment above 9% and no signs of it coming down, he is finished. The lunch pails are as empty as he is.

Cat fight! Cat fight!

I never thought of mere friendship as needing to be as deep and lasting as Ms. Perry suggests.

I would have loved to seen Joanie's reaction to Perry's comments.

These comparisons are neither an attack on the Clinton administration nor an apology for the Obama administration. They are comparisons of two centrist Democratic presidents

It had my interest until I came to that statement and then, I had to stop reading. Neither was or is "centrist" and to refer to Obama as centrist is incredible.

There is racism in America... and it is rampant in the black community... obama is the movement's leader... black liberation theology... **** whitey... and that is exactly what obama has done since day one... in fact he has harmed the black community even more... and set race relations back 100 years... and this author is a blatant racist pig.

Wait! I’d like to amend my comment:

Barack Obama may duplicate Clinton’s 1996 popular vote percentage (43%) in 2012, but it would be against one opponent, not two.

What a remarkably stupid conclusion. "Standards never before imposed on an incumbent"?! If Zero was being held to standards that HAVE been imposed on previous incumbents, his own party wouldn't even give him the nomination.

His race is irrelevant. His incompetence, arrogance, and marxism are.

Wow.

Voting for more jobs; for a stronger America; and for a sound economic future for America is RACISS.

Voting against socialism; against overreaching Federal bureaucracy; and against empty promises by a teleprompter-reader is RACISS.

Voting for a more secure Israel; for a return of competancy to the Executive branch; and a Justice Department that once again acts with JUSTICE, is RACISS.

Why is it always about race? Can't it be about who is best for the Country? Oh wait, I see why it's about race.....

The only standard that applied to this goof is that he is a committed marxist and has black skin.

The CPUSA approved of obama.
The Democrat party approved of obama.
The drive by media approved of obama.

This claim that poor little baraq will be held to a standard never before imposed on an incumbant is just planting the seeds of cries of racism and discrimination. “See, all you white racists didn’t reelect the first historic black president. You are all a bunch of bigots.”

They are pre protesting just in case.

Sounds like Melissa Harris-Perry is the hater, hates Joan Walsh and refuses to be friends because Joan is white.

We witnessed electoral racism in its most egregious form in 2008 when essentially the entire black population voted for a person because of the color of his skin, NOT the quality of his character (or any other damned thing).

Not really. 88% voted for Kerry, 95% for Obama.

Given that blacks, like other Democrats and many other Americans, were really pissed off at the GOP in 08, the Democratic candidate would have gotten 90%+ of the black vote regardless of the color of his skin.

Where his skin color did make a difference in the black vote was in the number of black voters who showed up.

It’s okay for 95% of blacks to vote for a candidate because of his race, but not okay for whites not to vote for someone because of the candidate’s race (although the reason for white flight from Obama is not race, it’s policy and performance).

Melissa Perry is anything but an intellectual. The truth is Melissa, Obama is an abject failure at governing. He is an absolute success at destroying. Blacks should be turning their backs also if they want any semblance of this country to remain

Ah, the elephant in the room that nobody is allowed to address.

The SCFOAMF got about 96% of the black vote in 2008, IIRC. Hell, Kim Jong Il doesn't even get 96% in his "elections" and that dude is a way better golfer than Zero.

When you have 96% of any group voting in lockstep, I think it's safe to say that you have some serious deficiencies in individual thinking at work.

This “professor” is one of many people who have been teaching multiple generations of her own race that they are instantly “disadvantaged” at the moment of birth by reason of the color of their skin. She and many others continue to perpetrate white racism towards blacks whether it is real or imagined, while ignoring the rampant racism among themselves.

Antisemitism, hatred of whites, hatred of different Asian races and black on black violence and murder are the modern hallmarks of Professor Harris-Perry’s people, but you can be sure she does not focus on any of those issues.

Look at the bright side, this line of attack by the liberals is going to BACKFIRE bigtime. I had an apolitical female friend who supported Barack Obama tell me the other day that she is really sick all opposition to Obama being labeled a racist. She said she won’t vote for him again based on that reason alone.

President Obama has experienced a swift, steep decline in support among whites - from 61 percent in 2009 to 33 percent now. I believe much of that can be attributed to their disappointment that choosing a black man for president did not prove to be their redemption or the nation's. The 2012 election is a test of whether Obama will be held to standards never before imposed on an incumbent. If he is, it may be the triumph of a more subtle form of racism.

This conclusion makes some sense.

Of course, Obama ran not as another politician, but as the savior of America and the world.

If you oversell yourself, you don't really have a right to get upset when buyer remorse sets in more strongly than if you'd been more realistic in your sales pitch.
