Christie's Calif. Speech May Not Quash Rumors [Except Romney and Perry: Others "Fringe" Candidates]

Christie's Calif. Speech May Not Quash Rumors

Jae C. Hong

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie didn't say yes, but he didn't say no explicitly, so his speech Tuesday night on "American exceptionalism" still may fan rumors that he's wavering on a possible run for the presidency.

Christie didn't say no, but pointed listeners to a video clip on the Politico website that combined a series of clips of him telling various interviewers that he was not running and would not run for president.

Politico called it the "least direct answer he has given to date" on whether he would run. On FOX News, political adviser Karl Rove called Christie’s speech a road map for a Republican candidate on how to campaign for the presidency, (snip)

"When it comes to running for president, you don't pick the time. The time picks you," said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute in New Jersey. "If his burning desire is to be president, then the time is now. You don't know what the environment will be in 2016 or 2020."

(snip) Despite Christie's avowed disinterest in the White House, longtime adviser Tom Kean gave the Christie-for-president movement a boost Monday when he said Christie was "very seriously" considering running.

York Post Republican royalty such as former first lady Barbara Bush and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger were wooing Christie.

Dante Scala, chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of New Hampshire, said elites want Christie because they "feel they can do business with him."

Looking at the presumed front-runners, they do not see former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as a real conservative and do not trust Texas Governor Rick Perry, Scala said. They see the others as fringe candidates who cannot beat Obama.

Some people will never be satisfied because they are looking for perfection.

Straw man. I'm not looking for perfection. I'm looking for competence. Maybe honest criticism is more than you can take. Maybe you need to be coddled. My eyes are wide open.

You want to tell me there is someone in the GOP race who is clearly competent to lead? You want to point to someone who has the character, the vision, and the experience necessary? Go ahead. Convince me. I see a ship of fools.

Please jump in Governor Christie! Once you are exposed as the East Coast RINO that you are in this b.s. election of ‘well bubba, ‘evron else done it so ill join up’ mentality’, then just maybe a conservative may declare.

I was stunned at how often he mentioned compromise and bi-partisanship in this speech.

Sorry folks.... it’s compromise and bi-partisanship that has trained our congress critters to think both sides can get exactly what they want. Hard decisions and priorities are a thing of the past with compromise and bi-partisanship. Everyone get’s what they want or most of what they want and they finance it all with borrowed money and the printing presses.

Brilliant. Sorry, Christie is entertaining and I give him credit for trying to fix NJ but we are way past the time for bi-partisanship and compromise in D.C. He spoke about leadership but his secret of success is actually a path to failure. Been there, done that, my kids got the debt to show for it.

Not to mention his anti-gun thingy. His concept of the second amendment belies his overall conservative argument.

Thanks for the reminder doc1090.

Also Tom Corbett signed the Castle Doctrine right out of the chute. Not Conservative enough for you bjcoop? Christie wants guns confiscated. Said so in plain English in a Hannity interview.

There is only one candidate running that not only has the conservative credentials I am looking for but also has the ability to go head to head with Obama in any debate and kick his but. That candidate is Herman Cain.

And if Palin jumps in all the better. That would be a conservatives dream come true having them go head to head for the top spot.

I can’t begin to tell you how good it is to read some sensible comments on this thread. On FR, for that matter.

Thank you both.

Place is becoming a zoo.

There is no perfect candidate. I can’t understand the cannibal mentality around here. Anyone who doesn’t agree 100% with everybody on every issue is treated like carrion.

That's what I say. You want to be president? Run for governor and prove yourself. Cain couldn't make it out of a Georgia primary, and he wants to be president?? Puhlease. The fact that he's doing well merely demonstrates how devoid of leadership the GOP is.

No offense to Cain. He seems like a nice man. But really. This is the best a national party has to offer. It's pitiful. And oh by the way, his tax proposals are utter nonsense, and worse than that. Putting a national sales tax on the table is sheer folly.

I loooooove FR, but it's gone downhill it seems. As for me, I'm a pragmatist, Lord knows. My personal views are so extreme, the Constitution is too liberal/Big Government for my taste.

Every act of political participation for me involves compromise. I'm not bitching about a particular issue. I just want competence. That is what draws people to Gov. Christie. He demonstrates competence. I simply can't get over how weak and pathetic my party is. It's shocking to me how bad it is. That's just reality.

I'll still vote for whatever clown they throw up, as always. I just want better. But I understand that we get what we deserve. It's a blessing that my personal life is as pleasant and satisfying as it is. I thank the Lord for it, and try to cherish every day. What else can I say?

Here’s the bottom line: SC and FL have petition deadlines at the end of next month to be in the primaries. If those petitions need X number of signatures - that process takes time and boots on the ground.

FL is too big to be ignored, and SC has predicted the GOP nominee since ‘80. Whoever is going to get in needs to get in real quick.

As I've said before, the DEMs are what they are. You tell me why they WON the election? Hmmmmm?

The problem is that with one socialist party, and one capitalist party, we don't have competition. We don't have a two party system. We have two one-party systems. There is no one to hold the GOP accountable, because there is no viable alternative. Hence, they have become sclerotic and pathetic. That's an observable fact.

When the Rats controlled all three branches (including a majority on the SC) they never compromised. They made it a dirty word. They will never compromise on school choice; never compromise on keeping homosexuals out of the military; they will never compromise on the issue of prayer and 10 Commandments in public schools; they will never compromise on cutting student aid for useless liberal studies programs, they would never compromise on ending illegal immigration and deportation, they will never compromise on a balanced budget amendment; they will never compromise on ending preferential hiring and ending affirmative action; and will never compromise on ending ObamaCare.

Do Republicans have any abiding principles these days?

Christie is one bid damn fool!

It is hard to get someone with extensive government experience who believes in reducing the role of the government that gave him all that experience. It doesn’t even make much sense, right?

I second that. He indeed would make an exceptional president.

Some of the comments here makes me so scared for the country. We are so divided in this country EVEN here amongst the good guys! And if the good guys are so divided, ONLY the bad guys are bound to win.

Geez. There is so much about this guy that is wrong that I keep forgetting half the stuff. I listed this in a previous thread.

He has said or done:

Gun controls are necessary.

Ground Zero Mosque is OK.

Backed Bush’s Amnesty Program. Said Illegals aren’t illegal.

Backed Mike Castle in DE.

Supports the Global Warming hoax. (Tax and Cap)

Refuses to back the repeal of Obamacare.

Said he is no more qualified to be President after a year as Gov as Obummer is in his short spell as Senator.

Was a devotee and cheerleader for the hard Conservative principle of Tom Keane back in the day.

Backs Obummers ridiculous big Gov’t education program “Race to the Top”.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Saw the speech live. This man is the real deal. It was inspiring to watch him speak. This guy gets it. And to those who will deride his potential candidacy on the absurd notion that he is ‘liberal’...well I hope you enjoy Barry and his syndicate for another 4 long years.

CC is with out doubt the man to lead the country from this horrible abyss. He panders to no one. He is committed to taking on the union crime syndicate, social insecurity and the rest. he is pro borders and has an absolute no BS policy.

Hopefully this country merits a man like him. soon.
