Thirty-four Muslim drivers for Hertz claimed they were suspended for praying during work hours, but the company contended they were reprimanded for abusing break times.
Backed by their union, the drivers protested Wednesday outside the Hertz counter at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, where they are based.
"This is an outrageous assault on the rights of these workers and appears to be discriminatory based on their religious beliefs," Tracey A. Thompson, secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 117, said in a statement.
Observant Muslims pray five times a day.
Hertz said the workers suspended last week were violating provisions of a collective bargaining agreement and a settlement with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reached two years ago.
"The breaks were getting extended way beyond prayer time," said Rich Broome, a spokesman for Hertz Global Holdings Inc. "It's important to understand that several Muslim employees who are complying were not suspended. It's not about prayer, it's not about religion; it's about reasonable requirements."
Broome said employees are required to clock out to keep breaks within the 10-minute limit. Those who were suspended had not been doing so, he said.

Always trouble. They do not play by the rules, then they cause trouble. Why have we not learned from Britain and France? And we should learn from Autralia!!!!
Alinski tactics once again.

So the suspended drivers were not following by the rules, then they make it about their religion, while other drivers were able to fit their prayers into their allotted breaks.
Suspended?, the article did not state critical information. That is, whether it was from a bridge, yardarm, or a lamp post!
Smartest thing Dick Hertz ever did.
As soon as this crap starts, fire them. Then deport them. Tell them if they come back we’ll take them out. Shoot one for effect.
Typical union cr*p. It doesn’t matter if they’re praying or looking at a porn magazine, if they break the rules, fire them. Who wants a muslim driver anyway, if they’re going to stop and pray while you’re trying to get to the airport.
Don’t worry ,Obama will get Holder on this right away
>Why have we not learned from Britain and France?<
.
Even if we had learned from Britain and France there is nothing we can do about it as long as we allow Islam to call itself a “religion”.
Get used to it, folks.
“Smartest thing Dick Hertz ever did.”
And the dumbest was to hire the bast@rds in the first place.
hmmm...why does this argument NOT work in public schools or work areas when it comes to Christianity (or any other accepted religion, for that matter)? How long have church bells been silenced under the excuse that religion must be a private affair, and their very sound was offensive to some? Now we take exception to Muslim religion? Now we bend over backwards for one religion only?
Sorry, but I refuse to accept dhimmihood. If our church bells cannot ring, if we cannot display religious symbols on our towns' buildings, then Muslims need to get with the program, too, and accommodate just like the rest of us. Or, let's open the door wide open to celebrate ALL religions - and let our schoolchildren pray and let our church bells ring loud and long throughout the land once again!
Has anyone else noticed you can’t get a cab without a mussleman driving? How convenient for them to be in the only non emergency/govt. vehicle tha can pull right up in front of anywhere. How long until a yellow cab turns blew?
I expect these characters to start demanding a separate set of workplace rules for them, from the ones that everyone else follow.
