If you teach people self-hatred, how do you expect them to respond? -- exactly. Let's take the British Empire (not the Brittas Empire ;-P) -- ideally it should be studied abstractly in English school. Maybe it would be inclined more to the positive.

But if one takes it abstractly there was a lot of good done by the British Empire and a lot of evil. In comparison, say the Nazi German Empire was pure evil. The British had their good points and that should be taught. Let people have pride that say in America though we kicked you out, we were friends less than a century later etc.

I would add the caveat that the majority of US public schools are no better. -- I agree.
