President Obama will attend the Carrier Classic basketball game between the University of North Carolina and Michigan State on Veterans Day on the USS Carl Vinson.

White House spokesman Dan Pfeiffer announced the news on Twitter Thursday afternoon.

The USS Carl Vinson, as the Associated Press notes, is the aircraft carrier that buried Osama bin Laden at sea after the Al Qaeda leader was killed in a Navy SEALs raid.

"We're honored that President Obama plans to attend the game on the Carl Vinson," said Rear Admiral Dennis Moynihan, the Navy's chief spokesman, according to the wire. "The ship is a representative of more than 100 Navy ships that are deployed right now. We see this as a celebration of service for all veterans, and we also see this as a great opportunity to showcase what our Navy does on a daily basis."

I don't think Michelle will be attending.

He is probably going so he can place a memorial plaque at the spot where his fellow Muslim, Osama was tossed into the sea.
I am sure he will bow at that spot as he passes.

I would love to stand at the bow of the USS Ronald Reagan while the ship is at full steam into the wind and see if I could punt a football off the fantail.

What do you think? 300 yard punt? :o)

Ooh! I got this!

Obama, like Bush before him, is going to land a fighter on the deck of the Carl Vinson.

That is he will be fishing for marlin off the hangar deck.

I wonder if you could hit a pitching wedge into the wind while at full speed and have it land on the deck behind you?

yeah, opening kickoff using the steam catapult was pretty cool. Problem was it always went way past the end zone every time by about 200 yards.

I’m surprised he’s going to something sporty other than golfing. Maybe he’ll hit a few worm-burners off the flight deck.

I remember GWB in the flight gear. Did he really land on the carrier himself? Those guys practice all the time landing on carriers to stay fresh. I didn’t think he landed on the carrier himself. If so, that IS impressive.
