Once upon a time Rush was pretty much the only voice out there for conservatism, with the rise of the internet and new media there are lots of competing voices. He is not the only one anymore. His power has probably declined quite a lot because of this.

What I find a bit confusing is, didn't rush practically endorse Romney last time around? Here are his exact words taken from Hot Air archives from Feb 5, 2008:

RUSH: I think now, based on the way the campaign has shaken out, that there probably is a candidate on our side who does embody all three legs of the conservative stool, and that’s Romney. The three stools or the three legs of the stool are national security/foreign policy, the social conservatives, and the fiscal conservatives. The social conservatives are the cultural people. The fiscal conservatives are the economic crowd: low taxes, smaller government, get out of the way.

I happen to agree with Rush that Romney is a liberal Republican, but why did he think Mitt "embody all three legs of the conservative stool" in 2008, but not now? Mitt is the same flip flopping chameleon he's always been - only now he is a much better debater and slicker candidate in general.

Also, I did not realize Rush was fully deaf? Thought he had an ear implant that allowed him to hear? No wonder he sounds a little odd to me now on the radio. Does his staff type out all the caller questions and replies to him rapid fire so he can keep conversations going?

Rush has a cochlear implant, which provides a "sense" of sound to a formerly hearing person.

Cochlear implants can restore hearing in patients suffering deafness due to loss of sensory hair cells in their cochlea. In those patients, they can often restore sufficient hearing to allow unaided understanding of speech in a quiet background, but the restored, electrical hearing is much less rich than natural hearing, and offers only very limited appreciation of musical melody, or speech understanding in noisy environments.

Yes, Rush has a team of captioners who type out everything the caller is saying.
