Al Arabiya ^ | October 17, 2011

In the first threat of its kind, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee in the Iranian parliament, Mohammad Karim Abedi, stated that Iran was capable of occupying Saudi Arabia if it chooses to do so.

"Iran's military forces have the ability to strip Saudi Arabia of its security whenever it wants and Saudi Arabia will not be capable of responding," he said.

The Saudi King, and the next 2 or 3 princes in line for the throne are all over 80, and in questionable, if not declining health...after them, there is no clear favorite for succession, just several dozen who have led indolent lives, spending money like drunken sailors, and probably not capable of ruling...let alone unifying the country.

I suspect that Iran senses that the Saudi throne is rotten, and might be toppled easily....The Saudi tribe is a minority one, and there decades long embrace and funding of Wahabiism ( buying off the radical clerics) may now come back and bite them on the ass..

Without a coup, it would not be easy.

They could drive through Kuwait, but we have major infrastructure there. They probably don’t have the forces to do an amphibious landing. If they are threatening nukes, they better had started testing a few, to show capability.

The Arabs will never allow the Persians to control Mecca and Medina.

Iranian leaders just don't know when to keep their mouths shut!

I hope that the Sauidi’s and others strip Iran of OPEC leadership. I hope that the UN puts sanctions on Iran that moves it back into the stone age.

I further hope that the people of Iran, figure out that it is time for regime change and that the rest of the world helps them make it happen.

Until then, Israel has my blessing to destroy Iran's nuclear capability.

"I suspect that Iran senses that the Saudi throne is rotten, and might be toppled easily.."

The winning response to the article's premise. I do not doubt the fifth column is in place waiting for a signal. As it would be a political uprising, i.e., an Arab Spring, current US leadership would welcome it. No invasion forces needed, few if any shots fired.

It would solve a lot of our problems in Iraq and Afghanistan if the Iranians were busy fighting for their survival. It would also make life better for the Syrians getting slaughtered by their government, the Kurds, Lebanon, and Israel.

Saudi Arabia is populated by Sunnis. Iran is Shi'ite. Regardless of the corruption of the Saudi throne, I doubt the Saudi populace would look favorably upon a Shi'ite coup.

They’re just going for the insult here. They wouldn’t actually try it. It’s like buying an elephant — easy. The hard part later.

If it wasn’t for the likelihood of soaring oil prices, I would agree. A doubling of oil prices would finish off our economy.

" I doubt the Saudi populace would look favorably upon a Shi'ite coup."

You are correct on the Sunni-Shi'ite conflict, but think Muslim Brotherhood as most of the populace in SA is not of a native tribe, but rather imported workers. Iran will over look sectarianism in the beginning to get the Caliphate established.
