As the Occupy Wall Street protests rage on in cities across the United States, there is a different response to the continuing fallout from the dipping economy in other parts of the country.

In rural areas suffering just as badly, people are rolling up their sleeves and getting on with rebuilding their small communities.

Ely, Minnesota, with a population of 4,000, is one of these communities

The state senate campaign I’m running, we’ve pretty much taken the theme of our campaign that if Washington won’t do it, it’s up to the states to do it themselves, and put the economic policies in place to make it happen. We’ll pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps thank you very much.

Close to my old stomping grounds on the range.

The natives there know how to hunt and fish and are capable of filling the freezer for the winter. Heat, a chain saw is all you need and a wood stove. God bless the range.

That's because "Flyover Country" folks are Americans, don't want or NEED Government intrusion, and don't depend on handouts for their total source of existence.

City dwelling parasites don't understand what responsibility or self-sufficiency is.

Like the Vermonters who have been pitching in to restore the roads and bridges after Storm Irene devastated many areas recently.

A phrase not heard or understood by the OWSers.

When it does improve- whoever is President will take credit.

But I believe that government cannot fix the problem of high unemployment. What it can do is get out of the way and stop adding more burdens to Americans and businesses

I also don’t think the economy will greatly improve till Obama is voted out and anyone else is voted in. He is a drain on confidence and a stumbling block for coming out of the recession.

Neat things to check out in Ely,
the National Wolf Museum
National Bear Museum
and the mine. If you get to the mine early enough you can go down and see the lab where they attempt to catch neutrinos. We didn’t see that. Oh and you get to ride down into the mine the same way the miners did. Enjoy!!

A thousand years or so ago, I went on a 10 day YMCA sponsored canoe/portage trip out of Bear Lake North of Grand Marais. Yes, great country.
