When Fred Whitmore's wife left for work, Barbara Smith of Canton slipped into her former co-worker's Ball Ground home with a gun.
Update 5 p.m.
Lt. Jay Baker, spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, just released the identities of the homeowner and the woman in this morning's fatal shooting near Ball Ground.
This is what he had to say:
"Inside the home they located the homeowner, Fred Stanley Whitmore, 54 years old of Canton, and a deceased person dressed in camouflage and wearing a mask. Whitmore explained that shortly after his wife left for work he heard a noise in the house and an intruder entered the bedroom carrying a gun and flashlight. According to Whitmore a struggle ensued and he was able to get the gun and fired a single shot at the intruder.
"The intruder was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives have identified the deceased as Barbara Smith, 53 years old of Canton. Smiths vehicle was located approximately one mile away from the incident location. Smith and Whitmore are acquaintances. It is currently unknown why Smith entered the residence. The investigation is ongoing." Update 2:52 p.m.
Dressed in camouflage from head-to-toe, an unidentified woman parked her car about a mile from her former co-worker's Cherokee County home, walked the rest of the way and slipped inside with a gun.
It was 6:30 this morning, and the homeowner's wife had just left for work.
A struggle ensued between the man and the woman.
A shot was fired.
A bullet hit the woman in the head, killing her.
That was the story that Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison laid out during a press conference late this morning, just hours after deputies responded to a shooting at 113 Bethany Manor Way.
"It's an understatement to say that it's just a bizarre instance," he told reporters outside the house. "The person that obviously knows the most about the situation is deceased so it's going to be very difficult to ever determine exactly what the motive may have been."
Indeed, Garrison had few details. The identity of the woman remains a mystery, as does the motive. Investigators weren't sure if it was a case of stalking or a home invasion gone bad.
"We certainly don't know how to classify it as of yet," Garrison said. "There's no forced entry into the home. The garage door came open."
The only thing investigators know for sure is that the homeowner knew the woman. They worked together at an unspecified health care facility. Asked if the two had more than a working relationship, Garrison said he had "no clue as to that.
"It is not a stranger-to-stranger," he said. "They knew each other from working together. Apparently knew the routine of the familyor, had learned that."
The homeowner will not be charged with a crime.
"Based upon the dress," Garrison said, "it would have been virtually impossible of him to have known who this individual was." Original Report
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a morning shooting that left one person dead near Ball Ground.
Lt. Jay Baker, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office, released no details about the murder.
"A press conference will be held at 11:30 a.m. at 113 Bethany Manor Way off Upper Bethany Road in Northern Cherokee County," he said. "That is where the incident occurred."
Correction, this is Georgia, not Ohio!
As a quick take, this sounds like a dressed-down version of “Fatal Atrraction.”
My wild guess is his wife hired her to kill him.
I hate when they say things like "home invasion gone bad" or "robbery gone bad." Like these things are great to start out with. You know, like, home invasion! It's like a party, only like, at someone else's house, and then like, the homeowners get all freaked out or whatevah... All fun and games till somebody gets hurt. A home invasion doesn't "go bad." A home invasion IS BAD!! Stupid journalists, I swear.
What city is that? Ann Arbor? I went to the Jackson homepage but I can’t figure out what city this is.
Jackson Michigan. About 35 miles west of Ann Arbor.
Or he was having an affair with the woman - and the breakup was deadly...
“My wild guess is his wife hired her to kill him.”
Yeah, that would be my first guess.
That would be an equally likely happening.
The bare facts are:
Wife leaves.
Woman known to man enters house without any forced entry.
Woman known to man struggles with man and is shot and killed.
Woman is dressed head to toe in camouflage... so?
Perhaps the sheriff has already checked all the phone records to see who was phoning who....
The wife may have hired the woman to kill her husband and left the door unlocked to make it easy to enter without forced entry. Arriving in full camo and armed certainly suggests a little premeditation. Parking the car a long distance away and walking to the location to avoid having the intended victim hear the car engine is also suspect.
I once had a co-worker who had made some bad decisions in her life and was consequently having difficulties. For some reason, I became the target of her resentment, though I had nothing to do with any of her problems. She decided my life was "perfect" (it wasn't, but I don't discuss personal issues at work) and she became quite bitter towards me. Virtually everything I did or said made her angry. I'm not saying she would have come into my house carrying a firearm and wearing camo, but I would not have preceded her down a staircase, either.
Some people are just nuts.
Oh, I was thinking Jackson County (there is one, right? Near Eaton?) Okay, thanks.
“I think it’s also entirely possible that it could have stemmed from a bad work relationship.”
Certainly possible. The Sheriff seems quite certain that he was surprised and did not know her name. It is the way to bet. Most people are not that good at lying under stress.
Rodney Thrash writes like a 10th grader.
Indoor camo? *shakes head*.
"Camouflage... You're Doing It Wrong!"
No way. First of all you don't hire a woman to kill your husband. Do I even have to give you a second reason?
The husband and the cammo babe worked together. Probably had an affair and hubby decided not to continue it.
And for the third reason, if you need one, the number of men who fool around is infinitely higher than the number of women who hire another woman - LOL - to kill their husbands.
