Elizabeth Warren’s Senate campaign has been fueled largely by donations from outside Massachusetts — places like Beverly Hills, the Silicon Valley and New York, where Warren held a fund-raiser last night co-hosted by billionaire investor George Soros.
Warren’s campaign raised an impressive $3.15 million from July through September, but just $974,000 — or 31 percent — came from donors in the Bay State, according to her campaign.
Nearly 70 percent of her fund- raising came from out-of-state donors, including Hollywood stars like Barbra Streisand, and out-of-state political action committees.
Many of her contributions come from places where the rich and famous live and play — like Shelter Island, N.Y., a secluded retreat at the end of Long Island; Sanibel Island, Fla.; and Seal Harbor, Maine, a toney section of Mount Desert Island where Martha Stewart has a summer home. But Warren’s campaign also points out that 96 percent of her donations were under $100.
The Harvard Law professor has tried to appeal to middle-class voters by showcasing her “hardscrabble” roots growing up in Oklahoma, even joking that she wants to start a “Hicks for Elizabeth” club.
But if Warren wants to get the “hick” vote, she’s looking in the wrong places right now.
Among Warren’s donors are a member of the Rockefeller family, Wendy Rockefeller, who is married to the great-grandson of John D. Rockefeller; a member of Hollywood royalty, Streisand; and numerous others in the entertainment industry, including musician Herb Alpert and director actor Ron Howard.
Warren also got a lot of money from academia, including a number of $2,500 donations from college professors in places like Princeton, N.J.
Warren’s powerful donor list shows just how important Democrats consider the race to unseat Republican Scott Brown.
She was already known nationally because of her work as a consumer advocate, but now has become a political celebrity.
“Elizabeth’s fight for middle-class families is gaining strong support here at home, with more than 11,000 Massachusetts contributors and people across the country who want Elizabeth in the United States Senate taking on the big banks and special interests to make Washington work for the middle class instead,” Warren spokesman Kyle Sullivan said.
Last night, Warren was again going out of state to raise money, this time at a $1,000-a-person fund-raiser in New York.
Soros, a controversial billionaire known for his generous donations to liberal causes, was listed on the invitation as one of the supporters on Warren’s finance committee.
Also co-sponsoring the fund-raiser was Emily’s List, which has already collected nearly $200,000 for Warren’s campaign.
Warren was absolutely despicable in her misbehavior before House investigators.
She (and Soros) does not like this whole Constitutional Democracy and Rule of Law thing.
The prospect of this Soros sock puppet in the Senate is terrifying.
Funny, the rats freak out when it is outside money helping a Republican candidate, but they see no problem when the shoe is in the other foot.

I hope Massachusettes objects to a shoe-in, bought and paid for forever, by George Soros. If they add to all the cash by messing with the ballot as well, she’s in.
in 2012, the Mass voters will turn out big time for Zero and she will be swept into office by the Dem Mass voters.

He may well. And she is a bad one -- she makes Barbara Boxer seem almost sane. Brown, though, has voted in a suitably moderate manner for this liberal state and incumbency matters.
Warren is Hillary without the warmth, charm and transparency.
In 1984 Massachusetts voted for Reagan. I would not be in the least surprised to see the Republican nominee take all 50. Massachusetts is probably no longer the most liberal state, btw. Vermont, New York, and California are probably worse.
Incidentally, Rhode Island and Massachusetts are the number one and number two (in that order) in percent Roman Catholic and percent Democrat. The Catholics vote Democrat because they see the Republicans (through grandma’s eyes) as nativist, opposed to Irish and Italian immigration.
Prior to 1913 Senators were elected by state's IAW with their own laws - primarily by the various state legislators. After 1913 all senators were elected by popular vote.
Once this change was made it was a simple step to start raising money from out of state - why not? After all, aren't the Senators responsible to the "People"? Then, why shouldn't they pay attention to the "People" in other states (and their money) too?. Can you imagine the furor that would result if a senatorial candidate from Iowa went to Massachusetts to raise money in 1910?
