MONTICELLO — There was a retired librarian, a high-school teacher and a hospice nurse.
About 20 sign-carrying people shrugged off the chilly, drizzly weather to "occupy" the sidewalk outside the Chase Bank in Monticello on Wednesday evening.
The one-hour gathering was the latest protest to break out in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York City. Like elsewhere, they railed against income inequality and corporate influence, and called for an emphasis on job creation.
"We need to focus on jobs (and) medical care," said Padma Dyvine, a 62-year-old hospice nurse from Hurleyville. "When people work, the country will work."
Hundreds of protests have broken out in the United States and around the world in reaction to Occupy Wall Street. The movement began on Sept. 17 in New York City's Zuccotti Park.
An 'awakening' Bob Doran, a 59-year-old retired librarian from Liberty, called OWS an "awakening." He said he lost a condominium to foreclosure three years ago.
"The bank wouldn't do a thing for me — and that was Chase," he said. "I tried and tried for six months."
Thomas Brown, who teaches U.S. history and government at Fallsburg High School, criticized calls for tax cuts at a time when teachers are being laid off. He said Congress should support President Obama's jobs plan.
"There's no such thing as a Democratic road or a Republican road," said Brown, 54. "There's just roads, and our country needs roads."

Fricken Monticello is a pit. WHY do they keep reporting on these miniscule “protests”? These are a joke, really, and make the point that no one really gives a poot about this.
I went to the one in Binghamton NY yesterday, took along my hidden camera, and got a little footage.
What a stupid way to “protest”. My goodness, these people don’t even know how to articulate what is bothering them, much less what they want. Not even after having Bill Ayers post a fricken manifesto for them.
I feel that there is a different agenda altogether with these things, a very ugly agenda. I hope to heck I am wrong. These tiny ones are just to establish “bases”, but the ones in the cities are getting ugly fast.

These idiots don’t have any idea that most people working in that bank are part of the so called 99%.
The only kind of jobs they want are the ones that don’t require you to work.
They want jobs? Why? So they can participate in the Capitalist system?
If you have ever been to Monticello NY you know how truly pathetic this is.
I really had to chuckle when I saw this story. Our race team stopped in Monticello to setup the car on our way from Watkins Glen to Montreal. Great little private racing facility but the town was “interesting”. Especialy when driving through what I think was a Hasidic Jewish community that on first appearances made Cabrini Green look like the Hamptons. It looked more like a commune and then the protestors accuse the Jews of hoarding their money? It wouldn’t take long for me to be off the farm if I had to live like that, especially in the winter months.
Then to read that there were what, three protestors? I’m sure the people in the bank were laughing at these dolts.
I attended by Tea Party events in 2009-2010. But I also attended dozens of events with just 40-60 people. NOT ONE of those made the news.
A little late to the party, there haven’t been jobs in upstate NY for 100 years outside of academia, police, fire, power companies, union contractors and restaurant workers.
The papers cover these sparsely attended protests since they are the “right” type of people. Yeah breaking news 3 people protest bank. Last weekend in the Hudson Valley on Sat was a Tea Party protest and the paper never reported how many attended (several hundred) but found the space to compare it to OWS. The next day an OWS protest was held that was mobbed by 55 people. LOL
They held an Occupy Wall Street rally in La Crosse, Wisconsin last weekend. The weather was fine, and the city is home to two accredited universities and one tech school. Bingo on Wednesday at the senior citizens centers probably drew more people. When Obama held a rally in La Crosse in 2008 a month before the election, thousands of college students flocked past my workplace to hear him drone on. Where were the college students, the people most likely to show up for a blame-the-rich rally, for this debacle?
