FULL TITLE: Too sick to work... but not to riot: One in eight defendants were on incapacity or disability benefits 100 suspects on disability living allowance, 60 on incapacity benefits

40% of suspects were on benefits

Less than one in 10 rioters were in a gang

53% of suspects were under 21

One in eight of the rioters who have appeared before the courts were on incapacity benefits and unfit for work, figures revealed today.

A total of 100 of the suspects were claiming disability living allowance and there were a further 60 incapacity benefit claimants.

So far 1,344 people have appeared before the courts over the looting and widespread disorder which swept across Britain in early August.

The official figures revealed 530 people - or 40 per cent - were on some form of benefit compared with just 15 per cent of the population.

However, for all serious crimes committed last year, 48 per cent of defendants were on benefits.

Four nights of violence in August was sparked after police shot dead of father-of-four and suspected gangster Mark Duggan in north London.

There were calls for those involved in rioting and looting to have their benefits taken away from them and an e-petition attracted more than 240,000 signatures.

Prosecute them for theft and make the fine 10x what they've collected. Then, make them ineligible to ever collect again.

Idle hands are the devil's workshop.

Any rational deficit reduction plan (in any developed country) would have to include the revisitation of “disability” cases.

This will not stop until those responsible are held accountable. Permanent loss of government benefits for those found guilty would be a huge first step in that direction!

Just like spoiled children the beneficiaries of these “benefits” are not grateful but tend to turn angry, resentful of the people who supply the benefits and, in the long run, their development and ability to function is stunted. Welfare provides much more harm than benefit.

In my office we have a (highly functional) autistic woman. She has worked here for 8 years. She is never late, rarely calls in, and works more hours than I do. The vast majority of people collecting disability and other benefits need to be cut off.

15% of the population is on some kind of benefit... Wow.
