Liberty Rocks, thank you for bringing my attention to the topic and will amend my comments to include those who become infected with the HPV virus through no choice of their own. I’m sorry you had to undergo such suffering. I hope that you have fully recovered from it all and suffer no long term problems at all.

I think as a culture we need to re-think (or rather, many individuals in our culture, culture is not a giant Entity) dating and courtship. Used to be, girls and boys didn’t put themselves into situations where date rape could occur. Social standards were such that a couple practically had to be engaged before being alone together is circumstances where such could occur. Chaperones and group association were common, as well as matchmakers or other such traditions, as well as a higher standard of morality, kept pre-marital sex much lower than it is today.

The above is no attack on you, just an observation about the degradation of culture and how it puts young men and women in hot water without their really desiring it at all, the flow of life almost demands their participation with attendant dangers at every step.

I speak from experience, having jumped into the flow (of sewage) with both feet, many years ago, and suffered the consequences.

If the general morality of the populace was much higher - the way it was a few generations ago - we would not be in the sorry fix we are in today (as a culture) not only in regard to the spread of this disease, but many others; including the out of wedlock births and all the other things we both know about.

HPV, unfortunately, has managed to follow people around and survive for millenia, whatever the morality of the population has been at any time.

One of the first cell lines established for use in medical research is the HeLa cervical cancer line. The donor of that line was a 31 year old married woman who was diagnosed with cervical cancer when her youngest child (of 5 total) was only a few months old. The cancer, caused by HPV 16, killed her within 8 months of diagnosis. She hardly fits my mental image of a promiscuous woman.

Here's a little more about that woman, if you're interested.
