NY,Washington protesters brave rare early snow

NEW YORK — Anti-Wall Street protesters hunkered down at encampments in New York and Washington Saturday as they faced their first winter weather test, with a rare early snowstorm hitting the US east coast.

"Snow, what snow? I've got a country to worry about," read a sign at New York's Zuccotti Park held by a girl as snow and sleet pelted downtown Manhattan, where demonstrators have gathered to protest and call for financial reform since September 17.

The rare early snowfall in New York -- only the fourth time in 135 years that flakes fell in the city in October, according to the National Weather Service -- did not appear to dissuade the protesters living in tents.

"We will put some salt. There are people giving information about low temperatures and camping," protester Brian Majdanik, 27, told AFP.

The busy kitchen at the Zuccotti Park camp churned out steaming soup and hot drinks for shivering residents.

Close by, at New York's City Hall, a small diverse crowd of public transport workers and immigrant rights activists gathered to show support for the Occupy Wall Street movement, listening to speakers as police looked on.

"On this cold day, Occupy Wall Street needs our support," Charles Jenkins of the Transit Workers Union Local 100 union told AFP.

Someone should tweet some helpful winter survival tips like: you should always wear wet clothing when the temp is below 32F and eating while cold makes you colder.

Ugh, you reminded me of the body bag we drove by. I worked in a morgue and it still makes me pause. Otherwise, these kids are digging in spitefully, like 2 year olds. No, I don’t want to see or hear about then. The attention is what drives them. They bore me, just a repeat of the sixties, I prefer originality.

Winds in NYC tonight should hit between 50 and 60 MPH.

They’ll be eating their dead by Monday.

They should be doing fine in those cheap tents and lightweight sleeping bags. Some of the protesters have tried public masturbation in a desperate attempt to keep warm, but that’s probably not a long term solution.

Here’s my advice from a few days ago:

The best way to stay warm in a northern winter is to wear single layer fabric clothing and make sure it is wet at all times. The water will seal the pores in the fabric and will help keep the wind out and the heat in. Also, when ice forms on clothing, this is even better since ice is a great insulator.

Hats, ear covering, and gloves are a bad idea. They absorb heat that the body needs to keep warm. You just need a few minutes to get used to the cold air. Remember, the Indians walked around naked and barefoot even in the snow. Birds, dogs, and cats don’t wear shoes or boots even in the coldest weather. Natural is best! Don’t be a wimp!

And don’t burn wood, coal, or any kind of gas to stay warm. It kills the planet! Electric heat is even worse, since some electricity comes from nuclear power plants!

Another tip: do not eat much food or drink liquids, especially warm ones. The food requires energy to digest and this saps your strength. Also, liquids make you pee, and this causes more loss of precious body heat.

Snow is a good insulator, so it is great to sleep on. Nice and soft, too, if you sleep naked. If you feel cold, rub snow all over your skin. When your skin turns red, that’s a sign that your are too warm. If it is uncomfortable, keep rubbing the snow on until your skin turns white or gray. You will notice that any pain goes away! This is the best part about snow massages.

So, with all of these outdoor winter survival techniques, you should be able to take on the worst weather NYC can dish out!

“protesters” and “brave”

Two words that should not be used in the same sentence where OWS is involved.

Great advice!

Also taking in one of the homeless interlopers into their tents will not only keep them warmer but increase security against theft and sexual abuse.
