It does not matter what the badge says.
I went with VW for my first new car; a Jetta turbo-diesel. I love it; 40+ mpg and acceptable power and acceleration. (Get the DSG 6 speed trans or youll be rowing gears every 10 mph.) I decided on them over Ford, my only other choice, because they had a diesel and they had no union legacy costs. I didnt want to help fund the UAW in any way.
As for Ford and the gay/lesbian thing, I found this link purporting to show that Ford backs those causes. Personally, I have no idea and (cant believe Im saying this) supporting greenness, and/or save the whales, and/or gay and lesbians is expected corporate behavior.

Anyone but GM and Chrysler.
I answered your question as though you were only looking for US companies. If that is not the case, I have been very impressed with the ever growing quality of the Korean cars. Japanese has been good for a very long time but as of late it seems like they have gone on cruise control, no pun intended.
FORD funds the Homosexual Agenda.
You beat me to it. That is the essence of free market capitalism.
You only live once. And don't cheap out. No C class junk. Make sure there is an "S" in the nomenclature.
Rolls Canardly......
I love my 1969 Ford.
Get a Toyota truck and forget about any problems for a decade or two.
If you want reliability get a Ford F-150.
Still employs American labor without kowtowing to unions or government bailouts.
Now what?
I live in Western Pennsylvania.
I most likely would want to buy a cheap SUV that can seat 7 people, like a Toyota RAV4 or Dodge Journey. If not, I would probably get a compact sedan or a midsize SUV that seats 8 like an Explorer.
I’m not actually buying right now, but will once my old car bites the dust or if I have another child. Either could happen very soon or within the next few years.
My main concerns outside of which company to support are price (cheap as possible. I’m happy with anything that gets me from point A to point B), durability (hopefully it can last 15 to 20 years), and safety.
Thank you and thanks to everyone else.
The amount of information so far has been good, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who could benefit from this info.
Apparently AMF, (Adios, M. F’er, as my scooter is affectionally known) was on the outs with USW Local 2-209, per their history:
In 1948, Harley-Davidson participated in its first Union Industry Show, which was held in Milwaukee that year. Recognizing the value of displaying a union-made bike to hundreds of thousands of people, they have returned with Local 2-209 members every year since then, with the exception of the AMF years. Since the early 1980s they have donated a motorcycle to be raffled off on the last day of the show. There as elsewhere Harley-Davidson steals the show. Everyone wants to ride off with one.
Currently undergoing, non-union (read, self built) rebuild/chop.
Harley got a bailout from the govt via Reagan imposing import duties on the Japanese.
But we don’t talk about that on FR, LOL.
“I most likely would want to buy a cheap SUV that can seat 7 people, like a Toyota RAV4 or Dodge Journey.”
DON’T GET A DODGE JOURNEY. Do yourself a favor ... and this is coming from a Dodge guy (Ram 4500 with 11’ dump bed).
The Rav4 and Honda CR-V are very good small SUV’s that will serve you well.
If you want 15 - 20 years out of a car, you better be cleaning it, waxing it, and learn how to repair it yourself and keep up with the maintenance real well.
doesn’t Ford donate to leftwing causes?
Sorry if I was buying a car I would never touch Ford, GM and Chrysler with a 10 foot pole.. Especially GM or Chrysler... I would go with Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, or Kia...
