I asked this on another thread, but why must cops be unionized? The only reason that I can think of is representation in case an officer is accused of something. I consider that to be a legitimate reason.

Of what? Like taking payoffs? Setting up innocent citizens to take the fall for something they did not do? Taking citizens (i.e. non LEO's) to court for things like video taping them commuting crimes or not doing their duties?
A large section of the LEO community is against the citizens they swear to protect. They hold us in contempt of being citizens and paying their salaries, benefits, and huge retirements. We will never see what the average Leo (or teacher, or state or local worker sees in salary and benefits (including retirements).
That is a real crime that happens all the time. Civil servants making more than those they "serve". We serve them on gold platters. Worse they have UNIONS to protect their jobs in a job that has no competition.
That is the REAL CRIME.
