OhioVotes2011/AP ^ | November 8, 2011 | Staff

Voters in Ohio have approved a ballot measure intended to keep government from requiring Ohioans to participate in any health care system.

The constitutional amendment passed is largely symbolic, coming in response to the 2009 federal health care overhaul, a provision of which mandates that most Americans purchase health care.

Great, now they can live in a bankrupt state but at least they won’t have Obammycare. Something about this entire vote makes NO sense to me.

It might help to know that the unions have been running completely false ads about Issue 2 (Senate Bill 5, the one on collective bargaining) for months. So a lot of people got brainwashed by that— perhaps they either didn’t read Issue 3 or didn’t even bother with it, since their union bosses hadn’t given them instructions.

Silly voters, don’t you know some circuit judge will nullify your vote.

Voters didn’t exactly goof on Union Limits per se. The law Kasich signed included Police and Firefighters, which was NOT part of the Wisconsin Legislation Governor Walker signed. Wisconsin knew cops & firefighter limits would be political death so they avoided it. Ohio screwed up in that regard. In fact this referendum passed today was introduced by a Republican. Even the Republicans in the state legislature knew they were gonna lose this. So now they get a second chance to work out the legislation again.

But it is TERRIFIC news they opted out of ObamaCare.

the public sector workers want their collective-bargaining. But they don’t want Obamacare, because their own healthcare plans are so awesome.

Wait, democrats running false adds. Get the heck out!!! Honestly, that Kasich was so caught off by this is amazing to me. Once again we see the Republicans bring a pee shooter to a gun fight.

Losing the Obamacare vote does not bode well, however, for Obama’s chances in Ohio. On another note, Kasich must keep harping on the fact that Ohio is broke and stick to his guns. As the economy in Ohio fails to improve and the Unions are seen gloating, I have a feeling the voters might, just might have a change in the way they view this.

Public Employee Unions should be banned forever.

Makes even less sense as Obamacare exempted them from it. It was part of the backroom payoffs that got the bill passed.

Obamacare got routed in Ohio!

That is the proof that the union bill was not about Obama or supporting Obama.

Kasich was badly served by the Ohio REPUBLICAN Legislature (we control both House and Senate) that loaded that pay and pension legislation up with all kinds of junk. Honest to goodness, they tried to spell out HOW evaluations would be done on workers. It was silly. It got so much into the weeds that it even had students evaluating teachers. Honest to goodness. (”student satisfaction, which may be measured by surveys, questionnaires, or other forms of soliciting feedback”)

Sen Tom Niehaus (R), a wheeler-dealer senate president, helped construct a bill that would never pass.

Had this been a clean bill just about collective bargaining over pay and pensions this would have passed by a landslide.

The media is going to present this as some kind of triumph for Obama. The truth will be that Ohioans looked at this over-reaching bill and rejected it because it was a monstrosity.

I stand by my original statement. The police and firefighters in Ohio have the same outrageous benefits and retirement packages that are bankrupting the state as other public workers in Ohio.

The issue failed because of the huge disinformation campaign waged by the unions. They framed it as hurting women and children, causing nursing shortages and causing delays in police and fire response times. The gullible bought the lies.

Yeah, well, while this is outstanding, the Union vote was a much bigger issue and I find that one horribly depressing. Couple that with the Governor’s approval and, well, we have a LONG way to go in Ohio.

The union issue will be brought back as individual components in multiple bills that will be much harder for the unions to fight with a disinformation campaign. Look for the bills to be rushed into law within the next six months.

The unions got what they wanted, but I wouldn't quite call it winning. Unless you count Pyrrhic victories. The state and most of the cities are broke, and no one is even thinking about raising taxes. This was a reform measure to rein in egregious spending on union benefits at the expense of the rest of the state. The only obvious alternative now is massive layoffs of the same insects who are jumping around celebrating like fleas on a wet dog tonight. Pink slips will start appearing soon.
