AP: Joe Paterno to retire at season's end

UPDATE - Nov. 9: The Associated Press is reporting that Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season.

As the amount of alleged victims in the Jerry Sandusky case climbs rapidly, reports are emerging that Penn State head coach Joe Paterno's coaching career will soon come to an end. Official support for Paterno is reportedly "eroding," even as Nittany Lion fans rally in support of the longtime coach.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that Paterno's 46 years as Nittany Lion head coach "will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks." According to two sources familiar with top administrative discussions who spoke to the Times, talks to determine "how to manage his departure have begun."

"The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno’s exit," the Times writes, "but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college football’s top level and who made Penn State a prestigious brand will not survive to coach another season."

The seriousness of the charge should have been enough for JoePa to find out the truth, rather than just telling his bosses and washing his hands of the situation. Sandusky was Paterno’s Asst Coach, his employee, but he didn’t seem to care if the charges were true or not. Just pass it up the chain and forget about it.

From ESPN College Football Nation Blog:

Here's the full statement from Paterno:

I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief.

I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today.

That's why I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.

This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.

My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to help this university.

Then this is added at the end:

The most significant line: "I wish I had done more."

It goes on to speculate whether it is such a good idea to have Paterno in the media spotlight for the last 3 games, a possible conference championship and a bowl game.

From the Grand Jury report. Paterno was not told of the specifics of the rape. Only that sexual horseplay had happened. So Joe reported it up the chain of command expecting the AD to report it to his superior. That didnt happen but how was Joe to know?

Small people always like to watch titans fall.

Interesting...

And apparently "titans" like to look the other way when young children get sodomized.

Looks like there’s even worse that Spanier and the trustees want to hide.

This committee the Trustees set up to investigate is a fraud, as was the investigation of Michael Mann.

The intention is to run time off the clock and after the furor dies down announce that Graham Spanier has been vindicated by the committee's investigation.

Spanier has to go, and prison time should not be ruled out. He knew the rules, no excuse.

Imagine being that 10 year old boy and seeing a 6’2” guy come in and thinking to yourself “thank God somebody will save me from this horror” and the faggot runs away.

I just can’t understand it. This story is so friggen horrific. What kind of monsters are these people?

Paterno and McQueary should not attend the game on Saturday. McQueary is a coward and Paterno is complicate in this mess.

As a college administrator I would’ve called Sandusky to my office and fired him.

From what? He was already retired for three years.

Check out the next to the last paragraph

Could Spanier be a fellow radical homosexual and did not find Sandusky's conduct out of bounds?

Perhaps in a few years JoePa will find himself in a facility that has an abusive predatory male nurse and when discovered, it is only reported to a non-responsive chain of command to be ignored for years. That would be a shame.

Yes dad is a dirt bag, told his son to leave the building too.

“To hell with the 10 year old being ass raped son! We’ve got to protect my good friend Sandusky!”

Yes, McQueary’s dad is good friends with Sandusky!

A weak and loathsome man.

It looks as though Paterno is not going to take the blame for the cover up, alone. I just heard on FOX news that others, including Spainer, had information about what was going on.

FOX just reported that there could be other victims coming forward and other people, who knew of the abuse being held accountable.

Uh. Get your facts right. It was stated that McQueary told Joe what he had seen. Joe knew. Joe knew in 1998. They all knew. Why did they protect Sandusky? Did Sandusky have some 'special' knowlege pertaining to Spanier?

Nope.

I can’t think of one program that has even come close to this depravity. Even the U (Miami), with all of the “thug-style” nonsense, has never sunk this low.

I predicted the first day that Paterno would not make it through the week. He is gone. His official date may be later but he is effectively done.

I also predicted that Spanier would'nt make it to the end of the year.

Excuse me for my imprecision. Had I known of charges as an administrator when he was at Penn State, I would not have swept them under the rug, but I would’ve fired him as soon as I knew (again, if I knew this when he was in the employ of the University). I did the same for my boss’s wife. Clearly this is what I meant to say, but since some want to use a timeline I guess I should be more specific. Sheesh!
