In order to volunteer to help at my daughters' Catholic school I had to pass a background check and attend three hours of training about how to spot abuse and potential abusers. After the training I realized that there had been numerous instances in my life where I may have been watching a potential abuser at work but had no idea what was going on. It is not obvious unless you know what to look for because I think most of us want to believe that it is a one in a million sort of thing and sadly, it isn't. It is way more prevalent than any of us want to believe and an abuser can be anyone; male, female, single, married, straight or gay.

I haven't read the charges, I don't know exactly what Paterno was told by McQueary. If McQueary saw something illegal, it is on him to call the police. If he told Paterno he saw something illegal, it was on Paterno to tell McQueary to contact the police, he was the witness. Obviously, Paterno needed to do more if he was told specifics. I'm just not sure that that was the case. Yet.

I don’t think anybody is suggesting that Paterno is legally in the wrong.

Just read the comments below you on this page.

There a times in man’s life when you must do THE RIGHT THING, regardless of the cost.

THAT DID not happen here....

From top to bottom, EVERYONE at Penn State, AND State College, is responsible for creating a culture where not only did this happen, but it got COVERED UP for a decade.

Protecting the children wasn’t as important as protecting the MONEY, the careers, the school, and the AGENDA.

Pedophile State needs to be SHUT DOWN, and completely rebooted. No one wants to talk about how the administration-pushed gay agenda contributed to this.

I don't know what Penn State does to their quarterbacks to neuter them.

Another former Penn State quarterback came on Mike and Mike (Todd something, works for ESPN) and you should heard the mealy mouth comments he made.

Nonsense like 'we don't know how we would act if saw something like that' and other lame comments.

Clearly Penn State football doesn't put much emphasis on producing men.

Again, the lynch mob shouldn't be aimed at Paterno.

Why not. You just said that he probably ran an outfit that was designed so he had no responsibilty for any problems with his staff or players and that he probably gave his 'lieutenants' authority to make problems go away with reporting them to Paterno. As you suggest, Paterno was not interesting in running a clean organization.

That is a very harsh indictment of Joe.

What a phony comment!

Paternao was in his 70's when he learned of this crime and he did nothing!

Imagine someone tells you they witnessed what they witnessed.

First, you would ask them, 'why didn't you stop it'

Second, you would find out who the child was.

Third, you would make sure that this crime was dealt with.

To paraphrase Burke, for evil to succede, good men have to do nothing'

Again, the lynch mob shouldn't be aimed at Paterno. That's like blaming 9-11 on the guy who runs Logan Airport.

He was blamed. The courts found that Logan Airport procedures/processes were partially at fault for 9/11. Courts found that if adequate screening had been performed they would not have gotten on the planes.

Paterno was told that a 60 old man and a child were in the shower-what else do you need to know?

Not what if I were the coach at Penn State, and this same agitated assistant told me that YOUR son (or grandson) was anally raped in the shower room?

Don't be a moron. Get your facts right. You don't know precisely what Joe was told, and Joe says the assistant didn't say anything about anal rape and was not real clear. Joe didn't see anything with his own two eyeballs and had only what he claims was a troubling report from this young grad student.

Could this grad student have had some perverse vendetta and fabricated the story? Extremely unlikely, of course, but things like that have happened and Paterno didn't witness anything with his own eyes. So the troubled and perplexed Paterno correctly passes the report along to the people who were SUPPOSED to do something about it... what the hell else was he supposed to do? Launch his own investigation? Get real - - he was a 75-year-old football coach, not a detective.

If you would have heard this report (and even taken it as completely true) and then jumped up and pointed a finger at Sandusky and hollered, "Gay pedophile rapist!", then you would have fit in very nicely in Nazi Germany.

Possibly. He was an employee of a state institution. He knew that state law required the reporting to child services or to the police. He knew that that wasn't done. He knew that school officials had thus broken the law. I would think that as a state employee he would be required to report to the state obvious violations of state law by PSU officials.

Amen! And the father tells him to leave the building!

I would not be surprised if we find out that there is a sex ring operating out of the college.

Yes, and some people are trying to justify his actions!

Not likely. Joe must have believed him as he hired him as his WR coach after that.

So the troubled and perplexed Paterno correctly passes the report along to the people who were SUPPOSED to do something about it... what the hell else was he supposed to do?

Joe saw that no report was made to child services as required by state law. Joe was required to report that violation of law to the state authorities.

Wow.

You win.

You are the most morally bankrupt person I've ever had the displeasure to communicate with on Free Republic.

Prayers for the future well-being of the raped children. And to those who doggedly defend them and their families.

Were you in this much denial when Mike Vick was playing with the doggies?

Good post, but your kind of thinking - - waiting to get more information before cutting somebody's throat - - doesn't really fit into the mob mentality of the small-minded knee-jerk hordes around here. If Paterno was part of the coverup, then he should share a cell with Sandusky. Like you, I'll wait for more facts and information rather that yelp in smug indignation.

I also think that Paterno’s direct supervisor tried to tone down the direct accusations of sodomy, by not using the exact terminology whenever he discussed the issue, providing cover for himself and those in responsibility for making the decisions, although, I am sure that they all knew what he meant.

BINGO. I have hinted at that in previous posts and believe it to go all the way up to Spanier. One has to believe that Sandusky had something on someone at the top.

Gricar in 1998 declined to prosecute Sandusky even though the police had him on tape admitting to molesting a boy. Gricar disappeard. They found his laptop destroyed and his car abandoned. On his home computer they found search links for destroying hard drives. What did Gricar have on his hard drive. One is lead to conclude it had something to do with the investigation and contained incriminating evidence against others.
