I knew what he was going through, I was a member of Toastmasters for years and those lapses do happen, even to the very best public speakers.

Starting out I had Palin, Perry, Bachmann, Cain, in that order, as my choices. Here in PA our primary isn’t until April so I guess I’ll have to see who is still in the race by then. Right now I’m down to three choices.

I don’t want him to be the Republican nominee

Do you want a nominee that will lose the general? Will that satisfy people like you? I've seen this before from politically unsophisticated people (legions on this site). I know a lot of people who are involved at upper levels of politics (Republicans, Democrats, and Independants) and they all say Cain will lose the general. If Republicans are foolish enough to nominate him (and I believe there's a chance of this), then the press will unload on him in a way in manner that will make your head spin. Count on it. The movers and shakers in the Republican Party are NOT as stupid as many posting on this site believe. They understand electoral politics. Just remember New York, California, Texas, Florida, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Illinois have just almost enough electoral votes to win. California, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York are a lost cause as is Illinois. Does Cain help and hurt in the swing state? Sometime some of you posters ought to think about. Cain might help win a few more votes in states that Republicans are gonna win anyway, but does he help in the swing states that will determine the election? The movers and shakers don't think so. Just some food for thought.

“These remarks didn’t prevent him from being a good president. I cannot believe the number of people who think these “debates” are such a big deal. It’s ludicrous...”

While only in my 30’s, I certainly remember the “Gipper.”

Does not being a good impromptu public speaker prevent you from being POTUS? No. Does not appearing to have a serious grasp of the subject matter nor your own policy points upon which you are basing your argument for being trusted and selected by a majority of the population? Uh, yeah. Does doing that over and over in cringing episodes of uncomfortability reinforce the image that you do not have a grasp of the subject matter nor a serious grasp of why you occupy your policy points? Yes.

Reagan was a gifted speaker. More so, his policy positions were welded to his person and when having to speak about them he did not have to resort to talking points or coaching to remark upon them sensibly. They were him and all he had to do was let himself evoke them. When your beliefs and thoughts are closely held and without your own doubt, they simply flow out of you.

To your mention of Reagan. There has been exactly one Ronald Reagan in the history of the United States. That means that they don’t happen very often and, in fact, happen rather rarely. Notable, positive nation changing POTUS’s include Reagan, Kennedy, FDR, TR, Abe, Jackson, Adams, Madison, and Washington. Very rare air. Most Presidents are Bushs, Johnsons, Tafts, Harrisons, and Polks and the American people persevere through it.

There is no “Reagan” this year. It’s not Palin. It’s not Perry. It’s not Cain. The next “Reagan” has not presented his or her-self. There’s nothing wrong with that either. Most times we are left to determine the lesser of two evils and who will harm us less if elected. That’s American electoral politics too and more often than you may want to think about.

If it makes you feel any better, Obama is not the new “FDR.” He’s a hollow, fragile replication for the left. His actions and purposes will be barn material and historical afterthoughts in a very few short years. He is a blip on the big screen. He will not occupy the print of Clinton.

but if you keep spewing out BS like that, you really should reconsider yours as well.

I'm trying desperately to help the politically unsophisticated. And you seem to need that help. People like you help to lose elections. And we cannot afford another 4 years of the Obama administration. It's not that I'm a big fan of Rove, but he knows 10X more about politics than what you know. He's not anxious to have a popular candidate who will surely lose the general. This is why he wasn't trilled with Palin and he's not trilled with Cain. Sure he gives guys like you a "thrill up their legs" with some of the things he says, but what will he do in a general election? That's what you ought to think about.

And if you want to criticize me, fine. But why don't you address the things I've said rather than just hurling insults. Not that I can't easily deflect them.

Good gracious, you need to wake up and smell what you're shoveling.

Do you want a nominee that will lose the general?

Nobody wants your stammering imbecile from Texas, so no.

I know a lot of people who are involved at upper levels of politics (Republicans, Democrats, and Independants) and they all say Cain will lose the general.

The people you know are all morons. Given your posts here, that isn't surprising.

then the press will unload on him in a way in manner that will make your head spin. Count on it.

Really? And they'll just let Rick 'Rumors Say He's Gay' Perry just waltz into the White House, right?

The movers and shakers in the Republican Party are NOT as stupid as many posting on this site believe.

That's true. People here give them too much credit. They're a lot dumber than people here realize.

Does Cain help and hurt in the swing state?

Does Perry? I'm sure he's polling well with the 'special needs' crowd, because now they know for sure that he's one of them, but I don't think that voting block can move a whole lot of states.

The movers and shakers don't think so.

The 'movers and shakers' don't think. Period.

Just some food for thought.

Lord, I hope not. Any thought trying to sustain itself on this drivel you seem to think passes for analysis will die of starvation.

Yes, the rest of us have yet to 'progress' to the point where paragraphs aren't necessary.

People like you help to lose elections.

Yes, 'people like me' who would prefer that our nominee didn't drool on the floor in between debate questions are totally the reason elections are lost. You got me there.

It's not that I'm a big fan of Rove, but he knows 10X more about politics than what you know. He's not anxious to have a popular candidate who will surely lose the general. This is why he wasn't trilled with Palin and he's not trilled with Cain.

Keep it coming. All this BS you're spewing is going to make for more than a few shovel ready jobs.

Not that I can't easily deflect them.

Bang up job so far, there Chester.

There is never a shortage of halfwits at FR. And, lately, they have all been in the corner of Rick Perry.

"Stammering imbecile"? lol!

That's a bit too generous when describing Perry but w/o getting into territory that might bring on the zot it will do.

I am well aware of Toastmasters and they seem to be a help for many who have trouble with public speaking.

Okay. Never a member and never bothered with them.

Confidence in public speaking is about mastering your subject, knowing the audience, and knowing yourself. You can either speak to an audience or you can’t. Those who can’t naturally can steady themselves with increased subject matter knowledge. I’ve also known many who had extreme knowledge of the subject matter who couldn’t bare themselves to the public.

Realize you aren’t perfect, no one is. Realize that no one judges you as severely as you do. Speak to the audience as you, an audience member as well, would like to be spoken to. Don’t apologize for being imperfect. And, most of all, direct the presentation where you need it to go. As the head of the room, you are running the show. Push in that direction and and make those who want to take it in another direction on the defensive. You are on the offensive and the room is yours if you make it so.

Just saying. I, most thankfully, can assume a room and present my points with success. I have done so in front of field employees and company presidents. It can be done by anyone if you heed the above.

Anyone can do it, if, you are comfortable with yourself and your ideas. That’s all it comes down to....

Not poison.

I think his mamma must have done too much drinking and smoking when she was pregnant.
