Syria has stopped paying for oil produced within the country by Royal Dutch Shell and Total, highlighting the economic tensions affecting Bashar al-Assad’s regime after months of pro-democracy protests.
While initially calm about the Syrian economy’s ability to weather the protests, Damascus has begun to show growing signs of unease.
Until a few weeks ago, international oil companies were continuing to be paid, according to people familiar with the situation. But payments then slowed and eventually stopped even though the companies continued pumping.
“Payments have been delayed and some are outstanding,” said an industry insider, under condition of anonymity. “My sense is the government has no cash.”

Why does Syria pay shell for Syrian oil?
Hard to imagine a govt worse for America than Assad, but its coming thanks to BO.
Because Shell takes the oil out of the ground.
Maybe because Shell found it and produces it.
Hard to get that oil with their 8th Century camel-jockey technology.
Oil doesn't grow on trees.
Pretty soon Al Qaeda will have another base in Syria to go along with its recent Libyan conquest.
Syria was the main place of refuge for the millions of Christians that fled Iraq. Millions of native Christians were already in Syria. I wonder where all these Christians will escape to when the new radical Islamic regime is installed.
Israel. It is the only place in the Middle East where Christians are safe.

Iraq was safe for Christians. Syria is currently safe, but not for long.
