The Tragic Lessons of Penn State A Call to Action
What would prevent this scandal at your school or church? Thursday, November 10, 2011
No one thought it would end this way. Joe Paterno, the legendary head football coach at Penn State University heard of his firing by the schools board of trustees by phone last night. Just two weeks after achieving the most wins of any NCAA Division One football coach in history, Paterno was fired. His firing a necessary action by the Penn State board of trustees holds lessons for us all.
Almost a decade ago, a graduate assistant told Coach Paterno that an assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, had been observed forcing a young boy into a sexual act in the schools football locker room showers. Sandusky was himself a big name in Penn State football, and he was considered a likely successor to Paterno if the head coach had retired. Sandusky also ran a non-profit organization for boys, and he brought the boys onto the Penn State campus. He continued to do so even after his own retirement from Penn States coaching staff.
After hearing the report, Paterno informed university officials of the accusation. At that point, little or nothing seems to have happened. The scandal broke into public view last Saturday, when Sandusky was arrested and charged with 40 felony counts of sexual abuse involving young boys. Penn State had been harboring a serial child sex abuser. Also arrested were the universitys athletic director and its senior vice president of business and finance. Both were charged with failure to report the abuse and with perjury.

"But the world has not only changed for college athletics. The detonation of the Penn State scandal must shake the entire nation into a new moral awareness. Any failure to report and to stop the sexual abuse of children must be made inconceivable. The moral irresponsibility that Penn State officials demonstrated in this tragedy may well be criminal. There can be no doubt that all of these officials bear responsibility for allowing a sexual predator to continue his attacks."
Dr. Mohler also stated:
“The moral and legal responsibility of every Christian and especially every Christian leader and minister must be to report any suspicion of the abuse of a child to law enforcement authorities. Christians are sometimes reluctant to do this, but this reluctance is both deadly and wrong.”
I strongly disagree with Dr. Mohler’s suggestion that we must “report any suspicion....”.
The act of reporting suspicious behavior has been perpetrated and encouraged by government agencies for years now despite that fact that in America, you’re innocent until proven guilty. A criminal report is supposed to be filed if you’ve witnessed a crime, and not because you THINK you’ve witnessed a crime.
However, in the case involving Penn State, there’s no question that crimes were committed.
Excellant stand by a church leader...
” We all need an immediate reality check. I discovered yesterday that the policy handbook of the institution I am proud to lead calls for any employee receiving a report of child abuse, including child sexual abuse, to contact his or her supervisor with that report. That changes today. The new policy statement will direct employees receiving such a report to contact law enforcement authorities without delay. Then, after acting in the interests of the child, they should contact their supervisor. “
Welcome to America without Biblical morality!
...The ideal pederastic relationship in ancient Greece involved an erastes (an older male, usually in his mid- to late-20s) and an eromenos (a younger male who has passed puberty, usually no older than 18) (Dover, I.4.: 16).
This age difference between the erastes and the eromenos was of the utmost importance to the scheme of the ideal pederastic relationship. The power dynamics involved in such a relationship, with the erastes always in control, ensured that the erastes kept his dignity as a fully-functioning member of Greek society, while the eromenos grew up under the tutelage of such a man and as such could become a great citizen when he reached adulthood...
..Ideal pederastic couples were ones whose relationship directly benefitted their Greek society. Another important reason for the age difference between the erastes and eromenos was that the older male was responsible for teaching the younger male about Greek politics, military, and social gatherings (Hubbard, Introduction: 12). The ideal erastes was meant to be more of a teacher than a lover.
The eromenos would receive this training in exchange for the sexual favors he provided to his erastes. Also important to the ideal pederastic relationship was the fact that the eromenos supposedly did not enjoy the sexual actions that he performed with his erastes, adding to the idea of the older male acting as a teacher: Boy, my passions master, listen. Ill tell no tale/Thats unpersuasive or unpleasant to your heart./Just try to grasp my words with your mind. There is no need/For you to do whats not to your liking (Theognis, 1235-38: 40)...
Our Country will not survive without real men who will do what is right without fear.
You are incorrect.
Reporting an allegation-—an allegation means even the possibility you think a child may be in an abusive situation or abused—is not “guilty before an arrest or trial”.
Any licensed professional (doctor, licensed mental health professional, nurse, ) MUST REPORT THE SUSPICIAN OF POSSIBILITY OF ABUSE at the risk of losing their license. The person does not themselves decide if the possibility is warranted. Many professionals are not even clear about that.
The report can be made to an anonnymous Hotline in every city. There is then an investigation, a formal investigation either by child services or the police. The number of false reporting is actually very small in comparison to the number of child abuse realities. The fact of reporting the incidence then creates at least a trail of reports, adjuticated or not, that would hopefully serve notice to authorties that several reports (often from many different persons) have been made.
The layperson is not mandated to report.
Again, the statistices show that a child that has been abused has told at least on average SEVEN adults about the abuse before something is done.
They think “its none of my business” or they are afraid.
Yes those types lack the courage to stand up to protect children.
To be a moral person also carries with it a duty to protect.
we are in a society that “doesn’t judge”...a society where there is no more “bad” behavior. Just look at Occoupy Wall St...insane “tolerance” of uncivil behavior, rapes and assaults..now even murder.
My, my. Mohler is horrified. Everyone should know that Mohler was not long ago castigating Baptists for the non-sin of “homophobia”. You see, Al and his friends that pushed through the Great Commission Resurgence need the SBC to be “hip” so that membership will stay up by attracting young people who’ve been brainwashed about the sodomite lifestyle by the government schools that Baptist pastors and leaders love so much. He also wanted to avoid having Southern Seminary seem “icky” to the kids he tries to recruit.
Now that the public is reminded that sodomites do what sodomites do, Mohler is so much on the side of the angels that he is urging a reign of terror by informants. It doesn’t occur to Mohler that going to police with the merest suspicion will ruin the reputations of innocent people. The notion of “evidence” doesn’t factor into Al’s thinking because he doesn’t want to be responsible for making at least a few inquiries and he certainly doesn’t want to do the most effective thing of all - getting sodomites out of our institutions and keeping them out until they true repent and give up the “lifestyle”.
If someone engages in the sodomite lifestyle he needs to be excluded from the church and every other organization. In fact, sodomites belong in prison, which they may enjoy. A true “win-win”.
Perhaps Mohler ought to retract his previous smear and admit that he is unqualified to speak on this issue.
Then they are not men.
Pederasty/homosexuality is prevalent in Muslim countries also—but they don’t label it “homosexuality”. The “joke” is: boys for recreation and women for procreation.
Pederasty was rampant in all societies....it was Judaism and Christianity which made homosexuality and pedophilia a sin which changed Western Civilization. But maybe in the Masonic/Satanic/pagan cultures which have rampant homosexuality, there is—like this Penn State thing—and you have the Franklin Cover-up and there was also John Maynard Keynes, the elite sodomite/atheist who passed little boys around at his parties according to Worldview.com.
At least ancient Greece educated the boys in war and politics so they could be “useful” citizens. The homosexuals today use them and destroy them.
Your accusation is complete bovine scat. You’re lying. Or perhaps you can provide us with some hard evidence.
We’ve followed Dr. Mohler’s program, and ministry, for years. There is not one instance which supports your accusations.
Sounds like your personal preferences are getting in the way of civil discourse.
You have it all wrong on the notion of “evidence” in these situations.
1. You notify the authorities of suspician.
2. The situation is investigated .
3. IF there is concrete evidence, the person is charged.
4. The person is then tried and, if guilty, found innocent.
In this case the authorities were notified, they did not investigate significantly nor did they press charges.
BTW..this is also a problem for girls that are molested, ie Planned Parentood, teachers, etc.
I agree completely.
You’re focusing on the “allegation”. I highlighted Dr. Mohler’s comment concerning, “suspicion”.
Ask any retired law enforcement officer who served over 25 yrs. ago (including my family) and they’ll tell you that a “suspicion” of a crime didn’t mean didley, as it should.
If my child fell and pumped and bruised his head while in the yard, should I be reported because some teacher notices the bruise? No.
No but if someone caught you red handed bashing your kid then ya...someone caught the guy flat out in the shower
I don’t have it wrong. Mere “suspicion” could be anything. Do you have any idea how many false rumors are deliberately started about people? Do you realize that suspicion could result from someone just thinking that so and so isn’t “quite right”?
Let’s put it this way, “methinks you protesteth too much”. Consequently, I suspect you are a child abuser. Now all I have to do is find your identity and contact the police with my suspicion so that they can interrogate you.
What could be wrong with that scenario? It’s for the children, after all.
Change that to the past tense and you've got a very likely epitaph for Western Civilization.
I was wondering today, did the boys in questions have fathers around? I’m not casting any blame, but I wonder if these predators look for boys with no father to protect them. I know if someone did this to one of my kids and my husband found out...well, I would still be visiting him in jail.
“What would prevent this scandal at your school or church”
Since Al is a Calvinist, his sub-title is irrational. In his theology no human activity could either prevent or cause anything... Calvinist are only Calvinist in theory...in real life they are always trying to change/prevent/alter/manage things...hehehe.
“...someone caught the guy flat out in the shower”
Yes, which is why heads should have rolled years ago. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more witnesses to these sexual assaults. Paterno should be ashamed, as well as all others involved who failed to step forward and report the crimes. They are all culpable.
You haven’t followed Mohler closely at all. In fact you are too intellectually lazy to do a search: http://www.abpnews.com/content/view/6496/53/
Like so many Southern Baptists, you are a soft-minded, ill-informed, follower of denominational celebrities. Little do you know that the GCR, which Mohler pushed, is taking the SBC into full-on social liberalism. Of course, you know nothing of that either.

World Perfect - The Jewish Contribution to Civilization by Rabbi Ken Spero
This is the “culture” they have been pushing on the country for 40 years.
Can it be they are upset because it tarnishes college football and coach Paterno?
Or are they upset that the scandal is such an ugly display of the perversion that is the essence of homosexualism that it might cause a setback to the homosexual agenda?
Many seem more upset that the coach was fired than the fact that he and other grown men in positions of responsibility at the college knew young boys were being sexually abused by one of their own and did nothing to stop the pervert and protect the children.
They are all disgusting hypocrites!
And disturbing that Sandusky adopted six children. And now the wife of one of those adopted (now grown) children recently took out a protective order to prevent her children from being around their grandfather. This makes me suspect that the adopted son finally told his wife what had happened in that house.
I find your link rather interesting, if not revealing. Why didn’t you go directly to Dr. Mohler’s blog? I know why. You’d rather read the misleading article of a critic who happens to represent your religious beliefs than the subject of your personal attacks.
Dr. Mohler had no control over the decisions made by the Presbyterian Church of the Twin Cities approved. Welcome to the real world. Is it news that liberalism is alive and well in the church?
Who is being “soft-minded, ill-informed, followers...”?
Dr. Mohler clearly articulated his point and position:
“All references to marriage and chastity are gone, along with the language about refusal to repent of sin. The new language speaks instead of submission to the Lordship of Christ and being guided by Scripture and confessions. In any other context, that language might not seem revolutionary, but in this case, it means the denominations surrender to those pushing for the normalization of homosexuality.
Put another way, this church has now decided that fidelity within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman or chastity in singleness is just too restrictive”
And Dr. Mohler states:
“That is a fundamental error that leaves this denomination now in the implausible position of claiming to affirm the Lordship of Christ while subverting the authority of Scripture. The removal of the constitutional language about marriage and chastity, coupled with the removal of the language about repentance from what Scripture identifies as sin, effectively means that candidates and presbyteries may defy Scripture while claiming to follow Christ.
Clearly, this action could not have happened without this denomination having abandoned any required belief in the full authority, inspiration, and truthfulness of the Bible long ago. This most recent decision sets the stage for the total capitulation of this church to the normalization of homosexuality an act of open defiance against the Scriptures.”
“Well, the feelings no doubt run deep, but the injury to this church runs far deeper than feelings. This is yet another tragedy in the sad history of mainline Protestantisms race toward total theological disaster.”
I wasn’t paying attention to this story until yesterday, so I’m not very caught up on it, but I think yes, this is how this stuff usually goes. These monsters know how to make this situation work. It makes me ill. No wonder we have so much of this now, we have a plague of fatherless kids out there. A pox on ALL of the people who caused this blight.
I’m afraid the government and its compliant people have outlawed “real men,” and as the saying goes, “We shall not see their likes again.”
This just In: “Stop Snitchin”
I will opt for biblical morality where designated representatives of the people investigate perported crimes and law enforcement then steps in where warrented.
Your false dichotomy of either anarchy or predetirmined automatic guilt is not what this country was built on and I have zero interest in letting either of the extremes that you believe to be the only options prevail.
Not in any way.
“Im afraid the government and its compliant people have outlawed real men, and as the saying goes, We shall not see their likes again.”
Act like a real man in today’s society and you will be descending on by wimpy little ACLU lawyer cowards, or their like kind in black robes.
The writer went off the tracks there. No, people should not report any suspicion of child abuse to law enforcement. The Penn State case was not suspicion, but more than one instance of eye witnesses to abuse and other very inappropriate, observed behaviors with young boys.
Reporting any suspicion can create injustices almost as severe in the opposite direction by practically ruining the lives of people who are falsely accused of such a stigmatizing crime. There needs to be a higher standard for the decision to contact law enforcement than suspicion.
Otherwise a good article.
Mr.Edd, not so. Fairness has nothing to do with my position. I know individuals personally who have been falsely accused of crimes they never committed. These same individuals were jailed, had their children taken from them, and had their photos splashed all over the news and in papers. They were represented by legal council and found to be innocent. The allegations were reported by either “anonymous” “witnesses”, or neighbors who “suspect” something.
I hope you never have to suffer through such ordeals. Sadly, you’ve bought into the liberal lie that we must report “suspicious” activity. Better yet, read Orwell’s 1984. Lest you forget, 2+2=5.
It’s always refreshing to read comments from Freepers who completely understand the issues and ramifications.
They suspected malnourishment from neglect, but she has a genetic Chromosome deletion syndrome.
The system worked we got her back but had to give custody to family who could afford the astronomical costs of the care she has needed.
Sometimes the system malfunctions, but the solution is to reform it not scrap it.
I advocated an investigation when there appears to be a problem and I stand by that. Charges should be filed before incarceration, but children need to be removed to protective custody during the initial detailed investigation - if a cursory investigation warrants that. Even if it's me and my children.
You will see me posting on most threads about rape and sexual abuse. Why do you think that is?
I have been on both sides.
I am truly sorry that you were suspected of a crime. I’m also sorry for the trauma your family, and especially your daughter, had to endure during the investigation.
No one should be reported simply because an individual “suspects” a crime.
I am happy to hear that your family’s ordeal concluded with a favorable and just outcome.
Similarly in a lot of abuse cases with children, if nothing is done and done soon the child will die or be maimed.
There is no perfect solution, but not having investigations is absolutely not in the running for good solutions, let alone the best solution.
From this article:
“But the concept of sexual orientation that underlies the proposed guidelines for the Church of England is very different. In the context of Britains Equality Act of 2010, a same-sex sexual orientation is something to be put on an equal status with heterosexuality, as if there were nothing wrong with such an orientation.”
“American churches and denominations had better take note. When a church or Christian institution bows to the authority of the state on a matter of such direct biblical importance, it is destined to lose biblical fidelity. The proposed guidelines for the Church of England should serve as an alarm to all churches concerning this real and present danger.”
Dr. Mohler has been consistently clear about his theological views on homosexuality and the church. Your false accusations concerning his stand on this issue and the church are disingenuous if not outrageous.
When Dr. Mohler stated in the same article:
“Thus, a believer confessing a struggle with same-sex attraction should not be condemned by the church, but brought under its care, discipline, ministry, and protection. In this sense, biblical Christians can understand sexual orientation to be a legitimate category that identifies a particular struggle with sin.”
....he was referring to the Christian mandate to minister and evangelize to the non-believer, or a Christian who may be struggling to overcome sexual sin. I have yet to read Dr. Mohler suggesting, let alone eluding to any action which encourages a homosexual lifestyle.
Your situation is anecdotal.
Yes, I support criminal investigation...for those cases which warrant such action. I do not support the unlawful investigation of law abiding citizens simply because someone “suspects” a crime.
PS president Graham Spanier was also firedhis bgrnd answers the one question on everyones mindhow Sandusky got free rein in the PS showers with young boys.
Did Spanier participate, as well? He certainly had an obsession with pederasty and moved hell and high water to give gay sex a foothold in PS.
VITAL REFERENCE Paterno is getting the most attention, but FREEPER PA BOOKENDS posted this WRT Graham Spanier, the President who was also fired.
Spaniers degrees are in sociology with an emphasis on things sexual wife swapping, adolescent sex. He claimed he wanted to make PSU the most LGBT-friendly university in the country. Penn State had the first gay fraternity in the nation. Under Spaniers leadership, Penn State has sponsored the Tent of Consent - all about gay sex, as well as C*ntfest (I hope you find that shocking).
Shortly after his arrival, Spanier tried to get rid of Paterno. Hmmmm. Why would that be? The football program was bringing in tons of money. Paterno was (and remained) one of the LOWEST paid college coaches in the country. He, Paterno, has donated millions to the University. Spanier lost the battle, but one has to ask: why was Spanier so eager to get rid of Joe??
It becomes clearer and clearer why Spanier was out to ditch Paterno-Spanier had to clear out any and all obstacles in his path to solidifying Penn State as a protected pedophilia haven.
Here’s another response to your lies, attacks, and the authors false claims:
Here’s Dr. Mohler’s views, not Bob Allen’s, on the subject:
“The Church and the Clobber Scriptures The Bible on Homosexuality
Friday, June 3, 2011
Is the Church guilty of beating people with the Bible? As strange as that argument might sound, it is actually a powerful weapon in the hands of those who are determined to normalize homosexuality and same-sex marriage within the Church. Those pushing for the acceptance of homosexuality now argue that Christians opposed to that agenda are clobbering sinners with the biblical text.”
Dr. Mohler concludes his article with this:
“Without a knowledge of our sinfulness, we do not know of our need for a Savior. In this sense, we all need to be clobbered by the Bible so that we will know of our need for Christ.
God loved sinful humanity so much that he gave us the Bible and the Law in order that we might know with revealed specificity the truth about our own sinfulness. Then, we truly celebrate what it means that God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [John 3:16]
The Bibles condemnation of same-sex behaviors is comprehensive and clear. It is interwoven with the Bibles message concerning Gods plan for humanity, marriage, and society and the Gospel. Human flourishing is found only by living in obedience to Gods revealed plan. Our rebellion against the Creator is never so insidious as when we declare that our own plan is superior to his.
When the Bible, in part or in whole, is dismissed as clobber Scriptures, it is not only the Bible that is subverted, but also the Gospel. The Church must recognize that fact clearly and fast.”
I’m not surprised by this revelation. Public and private secular universities, as well as some “Christian” colleges are cesspools.
Nonetheless, Paterno is culpable. He knew about the crimes.
They try to inflitrate any organization where they can get access to kids. Creating and heading up their own “charity” for boys like the Penn Perv, is not unusual. They get near the kids by playing mentor.
The Boy Scouts handled all the sex abuse cases that hit them by excluding homos and making a rule that at least two men have to be with boys at all times.
Stop letting public school pervs talk dirty to kids in the name of sex ed and ending “bullying” and crack down on pervs in entertainment who are always sexually grooming children and young people. Eject them. Re-instate taboos.
According to the statement on the Second Mile website:
“Our highest priority always has been and will continue to be the safety and well-being of the children participating in our programs. We encourage program participants to report any allegations of abuse and/or inappropriate sexual activity wherever it has occurred, and we take any such reports directly to Child Protective Services. We have many policies and procedures designed to protect our participants, including employee and volunteer background checks, training and supervision of our activities.”
Slick Jerry - since Jerry Sandusky FOUNDED the organization in 1977 - I guess he did need to go through the “employee and volunteer background checks”. Sexual predators are extremely cunning and manipulative and take great pleasure and pride in the fact that in their own mind, though they project a normal life to others, they are entirely dedicated to the pursuit of victims. Once they act on their desires one time their deviance snowballs.
Prior to 1962, every State in America had laws against immoral acts like sodomy - so that made it impossible for teachers, school administrators or governmet officials to be openly homosexual. Any that were had to keep it very hidden, since they were liable to criminal prosecution if found out. In the years since then, morality laws for acts between consenting adults have all been repealed - or mostly simply not included in major rewrites of codes that were passed under the guise of “standardization” of laws amongst the States.
Most everyone today has had the logic drummed into their head that “whatever two consenting adults do is ok”, i.e., it has no effect on anyone else. The Sandusky Serial Rape Coverup, spanning over a decade and including undoubtedly at least hundreds of people who were aware of Sandusky’s crimes and did not press the point to start legal prosecution, makes it painfully obvious that the “consenting adults” rationalization of immorality has succeeded in desensitizing most people to immoral acts of a most heinous nature to the point were they can no longer grasp the fact that child rape is wrong. We are just beginning to reap the whirlwind of the 1960’s so-called sexual revolution.
A boy in a shower with a grown man is a reasonable suspicion.
Well, why don’t we let the teacher “guess” that Johnny just fell and not that he had his head slammed against a wall.
A massive bruise on the head to warrant notice is a strong suspician. Most LEA investigate “suspicians” of lots of crimes..that doesn’t mean after they ‘investigate” and find no evidence that they charge anyone.
Besides, its usually not just one report that causes a problem for the perpetrator...its the accumulation of reports.
25 years ago we did not deal with possible child abuse the way we do now.. And even 15 years ago, we didn’t have the anonnymous child abuse Hotlines where one of those “janitors at PSU” could have called in his “suspicians” about what they saw.
It shouldn't be suspicion at all, but some observable evidence, and that evidence could be physical or behavioral or some combination, but suspicion is not a word that belongs in the standards for deciding when to call law enforcement.
There are plenty of horror stories around involving child protective services who acted on the suspicion of some busy body who is always suspicious, and who feels like the world is in need of their judgment and wisdom.
Of course, use of the word "suspicion" in statutes comes from the some sort of folks who gave us the "Affordable" Health Care Act.
Sexual predators are extremely cunning and manipulative and take great pleasure and pride in the fact that they project normalcy to others and are able to easily dupe innocent people----but they are entirely dedicated to the pursuit of victims. Once they act on their deviant desires, the quest for victims becoomes an obsession.
The saddest stories (so many more ashamed to speak out) come from single mothers with young children, who are wined and dined by predators lusting after their youngsters.
The mothers are later devastated------b/c when kids try to tell the mom what's happening, the mother refuses to believe "that nice guy" she's married to would do something so heinous.
The wages of "moral relativity"----and the non-judgemental culture spawned by these evil entities:
...........people who became aware of Sanduskys crimes did not press for prosecution, clearly underlines that the consenting adults rationalization of evilness and immorality has succeeded in desensitizing people to these heinous, immoral acts.....they no longer grasp the fact that child rape is wrong. We are just beginning to reap the whirlwind of the 1960s so-called "sexual revolution"............
I hadn't been paying a lot of attention to this either, but saw the link to the grand jury report. I started reading it right after lunch on Thursday and almost threw up. Never finished the entire thing - it was too bad.
This is all part of the communist agenda that has been part of the demoncrats' platform.
20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policymaking positions.
21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.
22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms."
23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art."
24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.
25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.
26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."
