Cult! A Classic False Claim
Mormon Defense League ^ | October 9, 2011 | Mormon Defense League

Some public figures have labeled the “Mormon” church as a “cult”. Most recently, ABC News reported that Dallas Pastor Robert Jeffress applied such a label in an interview following a political gathering where Jeffress introduced a political rival to Mormon candidate Mitt Romney.

Use of such a term to describe Mormonism is highly offensive to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “Cult” carries the connotation of dangerous, even violent groups whose beliefs are irrational and whose practices are immoral and lawless (Koresh and the Branch Davidians, Heaven’s Gate, Aum Shinrikyo, and The People’s Temple are all prominent examples) . The term cannot be applied to Mormons unless it is so broadly defined that its use could be applied to virtually any religious body.

Like racist language, the use of the word “cult” to describe a religion usually tells us very little about the religion, but a great deal about the person using the word. In short, it tells us only that the person using the label “cult” doesn’t like the religion in question, or thinks it is illegitimate. Bryan Wilson, a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and a noted sociologist of minority religions noted:

Go read up. “The Gates of Hell shall not prevail” against the One, True, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Faith. A Church that since Christ and his Apostles has survived though the blood of its illustrious martyrs and saints.

Just a quick couple of questions.

What do you think of the L.D.S. baptizing (Dead dunking) Jewish holocaust victims? What do you think of the fact that L.D.S. says that members of the Jewish faith are “gentiles”?

Admittedly, if I were Jewish, it wouldn’t bother me much, I’d just think they were insane. Wait a minute, that’s what I already think.

Dear Sandra:

It’s not so much a cult as it is a heresy and is no more valid as an authentic religious belief than is Buddhism, Hinduism, or Islam. To the extent it is a civil belief making for good citizens it is no different from Quakers, or Mennonites, or good-citizen atheists.

I suggest a starting point for analytical insight is the book “Heresies” by Hilary Belloc, a renowned English author and essayist. That is if you have an inquiring mind.

You’re right. Cult is a poorly chosen description of Mormonism.

Better and more accurate is to describe it as syncretistic post-christian paganism.

The word “catholic” means “universal”. To place the word “Roman” before it changes the meaning.

There are 50,000 Mormon Evangelists waiting to knock on my door and condemn me to Hell

***

That would be a typical CINO statement to falsely accused other faiths.

If all Christians had and lived the Love of Christ like the Tenboom Family what a wonderful world this would be!

The Tenboom family understanding of the love of the Lord allowed others to express and practice their faith according to the dictates of their own conscience!

“The Tenboom family understanding of the love of the Lord allowed others to express and practice their faith according to the dictates of their own conscience!”

My conscience says that mormonism is a false religion and should be opposed. It also says I shouldn’t elevate one of their false Baal priests to the White house.

Are you going to support my expressing and practicing my faith according to the dictates of my conscience?????????

When members of the LDS Church were standing side-by-side with other Christians to pass Prop 8, I didn’t hear anyone condemning us to hell and calling us cult members.

I've been calling the LDS Church cult since I left it in 1970.

It is a cult Sandra. You deny all the basic tenets of Christianity and then try to pawn yourself off as Christian. When you stop calling your church the only true church in the world and when you stop sending missionaries all over the world to convert Catholics and Protestants to your peculiar religion, then maybe you will shed the designation.

As long as you pretend to be a Christian Church you will be called a Cult. We have to call you something, and we won't call you Christian.

“Heresy”

...and by whose definition the Tradition of men, or the umpteen vacillating council of political clergies from Nicene council down through the ages?

If all Mormons repented of their sins and were born again Christians and lived the Love of Christ they wouldnt have to believe they needed to send 50,000 Mormon Evangelists to knock on my door and condemn me to Hell just because I wont renounce the LORD Jesus Christ and join the Mormon cult...

and just because they have been told they must to get past the Mormon savior and judge Joey Smith and into the Mormon harem-in-the-sky

and then what a wonderful world of peace my front porch would be !!!

Gollies I wonder why the Mormons wont do that too..

Now on the other hand I would not expect anything less from
a spirit that dwells in falsely accusations!

As I have stated and it is duly noted CINOs finds it hard to practice the Lord commandments!

History 1

5 Some time in the second year after our removal to Manchester, there was in the place where we lived an unusual excitement on the subject of religion. It commenced with the Methodists, but soon became general among all the sects in that region of country. Indeed, the whole district of country seemed affected by it, and great multitudes united themselves to the different religious parties, which created no small stir and division amongst the people, some crying, “Lo, here!” and others, “Lo, there!” Some were contending for the Methodist faith, some for the Presbyterian, and some for the Baptist.

6 For, notwithstanding the great love which the converts to these different faiths expressed at the time of their conversion, and the great zeal manifested by the respective clergy, who were active in getting up and promoting this extraordinary scene of religious feeling,

in order to have everybody converted, as they were pleased to call it, let them join what sect they pleased; yet when the converts began to file off, some to one party and some to another, it was seen that the seemingly good feelings of both the priests and the converts were more pretended than real;

for a scene of great confusion and bad feeling ensued—priest contending against priest, and convert against convert; so that all their good feelings one for another, if they ever had any, were entirely lost in a strife of words and a contest about opinions.

But Jesus often said....

1 Thessalonians 3:12

12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:

1 John 3:11

11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

John 13:35

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

John 15:17

17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

Ephesians 4:2

2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;

Admittedly, if I were Jewish, it wouldn’t bother me much, I’d just think they were insane. Wait a minute, that’s what I already think.

I find the LDS practice "cute" in that, while I do not believe such ritual necessary for souls to garner favor in the hereafter, Mormons do put a lot of effort into doing what they believe in their hearts is the right thing and beneficial for the passed on. I feel the same way about evangelical Christians--fellow human beings, trying their best to help others via voluntary conversion. So long as they respect my right to continue to follow my own beliefs, I have great respect for them following theirs. And why not? I find great inspiration in reading the redletter words of Jesus in the New Testament.

I might also find such efforts annoying, but so what? That's *my* emotional reaction, when it happens. Blaming someone else for my emotional reactions, seems equivalent to granting others a power over me that they do not in reality possess: emotional executive management. Teenagers and toddlers do that--blame others for "making" them feel a certain way... emotional immaturity.

As far as Mormons calling me "gentile"--well... you can call me anything you want, just don't call me late for dinner :D

this knid of attitude reveals the heart of the CINOS they cannot tolerate free will allowing others to have the knowledge to discern for themselves.

The CINOS version to combat this is to malign and slander trying to hinder or deny others the right to recieve more of the Word of the LORD!

The is a wide range of definitions for the term cult and if you wish to apply a non-mainstream Christianity meaning to it that’s your call. But even if you win the definition war Mormons will still not be Christians.

Even though Muslims believe in Christ they make no claim to being Christian because they follow Muhammad. You follow Christ and Smith yet you claim to be Christian. Since Christ himself said “no man can come to the Father except by me” there is no room for Smith just as there is no room for Muhammad.

I know this is not what The Book of Mormon claims. But using The Book of Mormon as your basis for claiming that your are Christian is no different than Muslims using the Qumran, to claim they are Christian.

What’s the obsession with trying to pass yourself off as a Christian religion when you believe that all of the rest of us have it wrong?

The word gentile is used in so many ways it is not always used derogatory

Many times it has reference in the facet of the situation.

Even LDS in some facets are considered gentile.

The Latter day gentiles has a wonderful role in the scheme of thing in the latter days

It is spoken of the the LDS scriptures.

Here is a discussion on Inghts into Isaiah

Here is a good explanation on the word gentile according to the House of Judah, LDS and Latter Day Gentile

The Light has come.
