ATLANTA, Ga. - Herman Cain, whose campaign could use some redemption in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal, told a crowd of young Republicans on Saturday that God convinced him to run for president and that he "prayed and prayed and prayed" about it.
The Republican contender made no mention of the allegations from former subordinates at the National Restaurant Association. But his comments here were accented with more than the usual references to his faith and his calling to politics.
"I prayed and prayed and prayed. I'm a man of faith, I had to do a lot of praying for this one, more praying than I'd ever done before in my life," Cain told a crowd of more than 100 at the Young Republican National Federation, an event hosted by the Georgia Young Republicans at the Westin Peachtree Plaza. "And when I finally realized that it was God saying that this is what I needed to do, I was like Moses: 'You've got the wrong man, Lord. Are you sure?'"
Once he made the decision to run, the former chief executive of Godfather's Pizza said, "I did not look back. And one of the misperceptions that some people have (is) that I'm not in this to win it. I'm in this to win it, or I wouldn't be in it! I'm not going anywhere!"
Cain has repeatedly said in recent days he will stay in the race in spite of the swirl of accusations that have tarnished his campaign and halted his upward momentum in national polls. Four women who worked at the NRA claim that Cain sexually harassed them, and one of them, Sharon Bialek of Chicago, said he roughly grabbed her in a parked car in 1997 and propositioned her for sex.
With a Republican debate focused on foreign policy on tap for Saturday evening, Cain talked about the need to replace a "foggy foreign policy" with a reincarnation of the Reagan doctrine of "peace through strength and clarity." He also said he would "stop giving money to our enemies."
The debate among the eight major Republican candidates is at 8 p.m. and is hosted by National Journal and CBS News.
You’re welcome, cutie pie.
Thank You. I’m still trying to get used to the site. I’m a Canadian working in the USA and understand the dangers of socialism first hand.
Severence package, not settlement. Significant difference.
Infallible politicians are playing with fire by invoking God in this age of compromising with cultural marxism (Instituted throughout all facets of society right now) which is diametrically opposed to God's ways.
Look at all the Kings, especially the "apple of God's eyes" that use God to claim power, then corrupted by power; society is punished along with the leader. Every Cain supporter needs to hold his feet to the fire and not excuse compromise in the name of politics and "winning" elections.
Remember, Bush was "only playing (Political) poker" when he compromised. Well look where that got us, more debt, corporations use to being bailed out, and an abomination of the highest Biblical order as a Commander-in-Chief.
(*sigh*) It's amazing the stuff that God gets blamed for.
In general, people totally miss what that phrase is about. Roughly it means “I am a person of faith. I have thought about this, I have prayed about this and I have come to the conclusion that I’m going to run. The inference is that if God didn’t want it, said prayer would have led him to a different conclusion.
It does NOT mean that God/Jesus appeared to him/spoke directly to him and said “Run”.
Now as for public perception, people either accept people of faith as leaders/Presidents or they do not. The language POF use is part and parcel of that faith. It’s up to the public to accept or reject it. Because if a person actually believes it, he/she isn’t going to say whatever makes people happy for their votes.
And the politicians that Cain/whoever would have to work with can deal with it. They don’t have a choice once the people say “We want him” or whatever person of faith.
“And when I finally realized that it was God saying that this is what I needed to do, I was like Moses: ‘You’ve got the wrong man, Lord. Are you sure?’”
Well, I am a big fan of Moses. You think Cain is going to lead his people, but fail to reach the Promised Land of the Presidency because of his past sins?
Hes not Joan of Ark, ya know.
Not yet at least. He does speak in the 3rd person a lot.
Politicians do this all the time in order to appease. Obama said he was inspired by (some) god(s) in a lot of Christian Churches when he was campaigning. The guy even claims to be a Christian who, by default, is led by Christ in the first place.
When politicians invoke God, the statement of faith better be shown by their actions or they are just very weak and often are frauds.
You misunderstood my intent. I said “In general” because many people have immediately equated Cain’s and other candidate’s use of the phrase with a fanatical interpretation/use...and gone off on multi-page anti-religous tangents about it leading to some insane flame wars.
I did not refer or mean you personally. Thus the “In general” prefix. I totally agree actions better back up their words.
The original story told of documents from the settlements. Cain talked about a woman he fired, which is a different story from the two whose names we know.
Bet he/she’s not even a REAL Texan!
ffft! Gone in a smoldering, stinky cloud of rainbow smoke!
“He does speak in the 3rd person a lot.”
Is that a problem? At least he remembers what he’s talking about. And has campaign issues that follow the will of the American people. And doesn’t question the morality of the people he’s trying to get votes from.
Now I’ll bet that if a Presidential candidate did those kinda things that would certainly be a problem. Probably result in single digit polling. Now Cain, not doing those kinda things, enjoys poll-leading status.
And conservatives don’t seem to have a problem with that.
We are all leaders in one way or another. Fathers, employees, group activities, etc... we all must show Godly attributes throughout our lives.
Leaders however should show a Spiritual strength that is exemplary in their lives (Both public and private). We pick who represents us so actions (Future actions verbally addressed on a campaign trail) should be judged more than words.
Obama verbally addressed and acted on a platform of promoting abortion on demand, yet he and many others who support him claim to be Christian. That is a road to severe consequences...
Just saying....
“Referring to yourself in the third person creates distance between “I” and “he.” So if you have an exaggerated view of how great you are, you could be using this distance to make yourself even bigger. Or, if you’ve achieved major success suddenly, using the third person could be a way to adjust to the bigger role that’s been assigned to you. It’s a way to enlarge yourself to fit that role.”

Esquire? You went to a gay men’s fashion site for psychological information to slag Cain with? And you wonder why people think Perry’s glee club is less than honest?
One can also say that it’s simply a manner of speech and that sometimes, Bill Clinton excepted, a cigar is just a cigar.
And BTW, Cain’s still leading.
If you would read the actual article, which I know most people don’t, you would see it is a quote from a psychology book.
Doesn’t matter. We’re down to Romney and Gingrich anyway.
Psych books call homosexuality normal too. Doesn’t make it so. You have a truth problem. You made the assertion that we are down to Newt/Romney. You said it unforced and of your own free will. That is a total end easily verified lie.
It is a fact that Herman Cain is currently leading the majority of the polls. Herman Cain has not withdrawn his candidacy, nor has Paul, Bachmann, Santorum, Huntsman or sadly, even Perry.
Now either have the decency to admit that you just flat out lied or admit you are a bitter Perry shill that has done everything in your power lately to falsely slag Cain with any number of incorrect and flat out bull$hi! charges.
FR has a policy against falsely and knowingly spreading pathetically obvious BS...like crap you just posted. I and a number of fellow freepers are sick to death of you fanatical Perryites slamming Cain with opinion given as fact, pure lies and the like. You are acting just like the PDS crowd did with Palin and it needs to stop. Now.
Yawn. I commented that speaking in the 3rd person is an ego thing. YOU’RE the one one who brought up homosexuality.
Guess what. Gingrich is a much better conservative than Herman Cain.
You’re a crybaby and a liar.
Esquire a gay magazine? Lol !!!! Here’s Esquire’s motto:
Beautiful Women, Men’s Fashion, Best Music, Drink Recipes - Esquire
It’s swamped with Victoria’s Secret ads, Sexiest Women on Earth, and mostly naked women.
What a maroon you are.
Your clear words are in your post above. Why do you lie? Do you think it makes you one of the cool kids? Speaking ‘truth’ to power and all that?
Bitter, bitter woman.
Esquire is a well known Fashion mag for Gay men. Fact. You went there for “information”. Fact. You lied about Newt/Romney. Fact. You have spent the last couple weeks or more slagging Cain and throwing crap like a liberal monkey at him. Fact.
There is a smell of ozone surrounding you.
Yer cracking me up ! What are you, 12 ?
Typical Perry fanatic. Resort to ad-hominim as usual. Now I note you haven’t addressed your lying. Why is that? Having a hard time staying on issue?
Lol, ‘cause I haven’t lied bucko. But thanks for playing!!! I have some hay to bale ! Lol !!
Then explain how it is that Cain leads the polls, Bachmann, Santorum, Paul Huntsman and even Perry are still running when you CLEARLY SAID that we are down to Newt/Romney?
This is Bizzare! One of these things cannot be true!
Liar.
I am confuesd...you said we were down to Newt and Romney but this article clearly says otherwise. Is the NY Daily News lying or are you? They back up my statement. Hmmmm...
BTW, once that hay of yours comes out the other end of the horse, throw it somewhere besides at Herman Cain. And you might want to shovel more carefully in general because right now you’re covered in it.

It might be time to stop laughing at Herman Cain.
His presidential campaign, once considered a vanity project designed to sell copies of his new book, continues to chug along the tracks, refusing to be derailed by scandal or the lack of a well-organized staff.
Cain has a lead in a handful of national polls over the heavily favored Mitt Romney and some political observers believe a once-unthinkable path to the Republican nomination could emerge for the charismatic former pizza CEO.

I see no particular “past sins” that would cause that.
Norm, you’ve been here long enough to understand that magritte doesn’t have all the marbles the game requires.

Please let me know if you want ON or OFF my Viking Kitty/ZOT ping list!. . . don't be shy.
Oh I do. I’m just fed up with her BS and not letting her get away with her slime any more. Her and the rest of the Posse are pulling the same PDS routine and they can’t be given a pass. They are being the polar opposite of conservative and it has to stop.
Hi Darkwing! Nice to see your ducky beak. I miss you, but it’s great that you’re working and busy. Thanks for the ping so I could say hello.
Nor did Moses until the time came...
He is the terror that Freeps in the night ;)
Lol...you guys are sure fun and I enjoy it. I’ll let lurkers decided who has the “marbles” to play your simple games!
Glad to see you also. I will be working long hours for a few more months. Just doing my part to prove that Americans aren't lazy.
I'll try to stop by when I can.
Ever going to admit you lied troll? Yes, people clearly see whose marbles are missing.
BTW, check your Psych book and see what it has to say about ‘LOL’ing at inappropriate times. Which you seem to do everytime someone catches you in a lie or other misrepresentation.
I find it extremely interesting that you’re so familiar with a sex magazine targeting men...
Esquire has been around since the 30s. It’s not a sex magazine like Hustler.
Oh, and I’m a man. I like girls.
See you when I see you then. Be well.
Lurkers don’t even bother to click on Perry threads where you and the rest of the short bus kids drool on the floor.
>> “Esquire has been around since the 30s. Its not a sex magazine like Hustler.” <<
.
No, not like Hustler. Esquire has been mostly a Homo-Sex magazine for the past decade.
Another fine reading for the ages, my brother. Many thank yous.
So, Newin Texsas is no more. It surprises me not, for that one seemed to have borne a strange scent from the very start. It also mis-spelled the name of the great state of Texas in its handle, which caused me no end of irritation, every time it spoke.
On that basis alone, do I bid it good riddance! LOL
The original article wasn’t in the NYT. Google it.
Oh hell...that was meant for Margirette!!!
Sorry bout that TOL ;)
Just to send it to the right person...
Who said it was a sex mag? I said it was a fashion mag for gay men. Which it is. Which is why I stopped buying it in the 80s when they started catering to the other team.
Misrepresent much? Again?
And if you are a guy, you sure dont act like one.
The Christophobic press will have a field day with this quote.
