You might think US politics can be a nasty business, but Italy is something else. All Italian politicians face constant accusations about sexual impropriety, nepotism, corruption, judicial interference and even murder.

Democracy is not served by all this, because it allows the guilty to hide with the innocent. These constant personal attacks are so common they don't carry much weight anymore. In other words, its not that the mud doesn't stick, its just that there is so much mud around it doesn't really matter if it does.
