SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS/AP) - Thieves have nabbed a 3-foot-long copper sword atop Lincoln’s Tomb in what is believed to be the first theft at the site in more than a century.
An employee noticed last week that the sword was cut from a statue of a Civil War artillery officer, the (Springfield) State Journal-Register reported Saturday. Officials think the sword was stolen sometime between September and early November.

This type of timeframe is really unacceptable. With all the internet picture sites out there, it can't be that hard to establish when the sword was stolen. I can establish that the sword was there on September 20th, 2011, but I only spent three minutes searching. Surely it couldn't be that hard to search the various photo sharing sites to find out the exact date at least?

I’m betting it was an illegal alien. They don’t respect our laws or our history. And are responsible for a great deal of the copper thefts.
These days there seems to be a decrease in the regard for anything having to do with America's history.
But those guys wouldn't have stopped with stealing the sword.
Undoubtedly a lib-thief. Nobody needs weapons anyway, even in a statue. I remember about 30 years ago some idiot anti-gun lib got in trouble when she modified a minute-man’s musket into a fishing pole on her state’s license plate.
How do we know it wasn’t the Visgoths that stole the sword?
None of these guys - I’ve found them to be all hat and no cattle. One of them boasted about urinating on Sherman’s grave, which I found a potentially impressive feat considering that they squat to pee.
Since we are living in the Pax Obama, the sword may have been beaten into plowshares.
Have they fired all the park employees? Who takes care of the Tomb and surrounding areas?
