Wyoming coach resigns after forcing offensive survey on players (Hurt Feelings Report Card)
Yahoo News ^ | 14NOV2011 | Cameron Smith

A high school football coach in Wyoming has resigned after orchestrating what may be the single least appropriate motivational tactic in recent years, handing his players a "Hurt Feelings Report" in which students were asked to select from various offensive options to describe why they were upset.

As first reported by the Buffalo Bulletin, Casper Star-Tribune and The Advocate before being circulated throughout the internet, Buffalo (Wyo.) High football coach Pat Lynch offered up a questionnaire to his players that offered the following possible reasons for their disappointment, as reported by The Advocate (beware in reading the following paragraph: Some of the choices are pretty abhorrent):

The survey, under a list of reasons for hurt feelings, includes such choices as "I am a queer," "I am a little bitch," and "I have woman like hormones." It asks for the name of the "little sissy filing report" and his "girly-man signature," plus the "real-man signature" of the person accused of causing hurt feelings.

You can see a full copy of the survey here.

If it’s funny and related to motivating the team, sure.

He still has his job as the guidance counselor for the school.

Which makes the Hurt Feelings Report doubly appropriate for him to distribute to the rest of the whiners at school.

Somebody needs to send this guy a dozen roses.

This thread has attracted quite a few Nancys.

Interesting - the week Bobby Knight’s record will fall.

I used to play and coach. I'm busting out laughing at this. Most of the players probably laughed at this. It looks like one of those office fake surveys that get passed around workplaces.

The players, if any who turned this into coach are probably bench warmers mad about playing time.

Just like they laughed at Mike Leach’s “Fat Little Girlfriends” press conference.

Wrong, wrong, a thousand times wrong. THE most important part of any coach’s job is to make sure the players become functioning adults, able to stand on their own two feet. Winning is secondary to developing men and women.

I agree. But I don't see how this stupid thing is moving the ball forward on that score.

I remember my High School coach. He spent half his time haranguing us about Jesus, and the other half accusing us of being homosexuals. This "style" made him a much less effective coach, IMHO.

I am all for using sports to teach the kids important lessons about life. I think that is the best reason for school sports. But the coach should have a plan on what lessons he wants to teach. Stupid anti-homosexual nonsense should not be high on the list.

I don't know enough about this guy to offer an opinion on his overall program, but if this hand-out was typical, he needs to adjust his message.

So, what's your point, Eldon?

As a former coach in football, I can say that it probably wasn't intended to be "anti-homosexual" It was intended to be anti-effeminacy. It's a humorous way of telling the team to toughen up. You can get your ass kicked in practice or get it kicked in the game.

That's why I say I don't know enough about this coach's overall message. It could well be that this little bit of anti-homosexual ugliness was just careless shorthand for "man up", which is an appropriate message, no doubt. If anti-homosexual diatribes are not a stock bit of his coaching style, they I would be inclined to cut him some slack.

If I was a defensive player on this team, my feelings would be hurt that he only sent out an offensive survey. What? No love for the defense?

Against my better judgement, (and with all the controversy recently over Penn State)... I will admit that I am a football Mom. During the last two years, I have seen all sorts of football coaches from other teams. Fortunately, my son has fabulous ones. I won’t tolerate physical abuse in any manner or form. However, I don’t mind and fully understand when coaches push a player. It is a sport that takes a certain amount of ... shall we say, male testosterone. Many times, it is all about rising above fear, insecurity and facing a much larger team. Since my son plays the line, I know that one assistance coach will whisper to him, ‘Pick your B*tch”. Doesn’t bother me in the least. Many of the freshman J.V. who were more sensitive to running, drills, and hits... left the team early on in the season. It just wasn’t for them. I don’t have a problem with the “feelings” report. My son howled when he read it!

And that’s how it should be! If some of them can’t handle that kind of sport and the coaching just graciously bow out and find something else fun to play!

That’s because the defense was doing their job like they should without complaint.
