Herman Cain is theoretically a great candidate for president. He's a smart, black, successful, conservative "outsider." But as the reality sets in, it's clear that Mr. Cain is barely more ready for the office he seeks than Sarah Palin (or Barack Obama) was four years ago. Cain's performance in a long interview on Monday crystallized this view which has been forming in the minds of many GOP voters in recent weeks.
Mr. Cain's responses in Saturday's Republican debate in South Carolina -- which focused on foreign policy -- were a bunch of platitudes about getting good advice before making a decision. Frequently, his answers on topics that he doesn't really know much about focus on a few points of process, on getting quality advice, on not needing to know everything in advance, and so on.
But this is the real world and these are dangerous times. While the 2012 election will primarily be about jobs and the economy, events across the Arab world and escalating tensions between Iran and Israel -- not least because of the IAEA's most recent report about advances in Iran's nuclear weapon program -- make foreign policy and national security expertise critically important in our next president.
If there is anything America has been reminded of by Barack Obama, it's that the presidency is no place for on-the-job training -- and it's even less so when potential nuclear conflict is involved. Herman Cain gave an interview to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel on Monday in which his answers on questions about Libya -- and his further discussion with the newspaper's editors on broader foreign policy issues -- sounded like a student trying hard to remember the answers for a test he's been cramming for.

My father retired from the ministry after many years and was offered a job as a plant manager of a large insulation business. He had never done that type of work before, but the man who owned it said he “needed someone honest to run the place” since his sons and other managers had nearly bankrupt him.
My dad got rid of the employees he needed to...and in his words “hired the folks that knew much more than he did so he could learn from them and make proper decisions.”
The business flourished and my dad worked there for 15 yrs as a beloved manager.

What is the most pressing foreign policy issue of our day?
Iran’s attempt to get nukes and missiles to delver them.
So what do we do? Invade a 4th country? Ignore it? Start a covert war with Iran? Help the Gulf Arabs and the Israelis get nukes also?
OR Do we make forceful clear statement, as Cain would, that any attack on Israel will be viewed as an attack on the USA.
Then we do back up that statement, as Cain says, an build up our system of naval warships (i.e the Aegis ships Cain is talking about) that have the ability to knock down any Iranian missiles in flight thus giving our side an ability to neutralize the Iranian threat and protect our regional interests, without starting yet another war or adding to the destabilizing of the region.
Can we really just rely on Mutual Assured Destruction to Contain the leaders of an Iranian Death Cult that believes that a massive act of suicide will usher in the rule of the Hidden Mahdi?
Cain is the only one who looked at the real problem with Iran and said “here are the solutions”
We don’t have to worry about that with Newt. He’s the smartest guy in the room. He hasn’t been the most consistent conservative over the years, but he would immediately be the most conservative president since Reagan. And he knows his stuff. I like Cain, but I can’t argue with the experience criticism. He has time to get up to speed, though. We’ll see.

Let me ask, was George Washington a Professional Politician? Some of our best presidents were NOT professional politicians and some of our WORST were.

I think the question on Libya caught him off guard. He wasn’t sure if it was Libya the country or Libby Ya some chic that was making a claim.
Yes, it takes a REAL PROFESSIONAL POLITICIAN, with decades of government experience, to cause the kind of mess we have in Washington, and Herman is just not qualified.
The only thing he has ever done is take failing companies and turn them into a successes.
And we dont want any of that going on in Washington... no sirreee.
With our country in the dire straits it is...how anyone can consider those without experience defies understanding. If Cain wins he will be a “figure head” because he will need enoormous propping up by others behind the scenes, just as he’s being given now.....he would have been finished already had others not stepped in to shore him up.

I agree, but Cain might be the best one left who has a chance. Cain MIGHT work out if he has the wisdom to choose cabinet members that make up for his lack of expertise in areas.
We needed a military leader like Ike in his times, but our economic situation now shows the need for a person with business management skills.
Sarah Palin’s record as governor shows she was vastly more qualified to be president than Cain or Obama. I have to wholeheartedly disagree with that statement in the article about her being not qualified.
All you need as president for good foreign policy is common sense and the ability to trust your experts.
That’s what Cain’s points were centered around.
As leader of the free world, that’s what you should be doing... LEADING.
NOBODY on that stage or especially in the white house has any right answers... ONLY OPINION!

That clip was bad. You read the transcript and you cringe. I’m sure he was tired, but then his staff should have never let him be interviewed at that point. They are mishandling him - they’re amateurs, and it shows.
But IMO, Cain made it worse when he says “it was only a pause, good grief.” Are you kidding me? You got asked a question and the first thing you say is: “Did the President support the uprising?”
Hint 1: I know the answer to that Herman.
Hint 2: You’re supposed to know the answer to that Herman.
I like Cain. But he better D up, because the scrutiny isn’t going to decrease. It’s only going to get worse. Time to hire some staff that can manage his schedule and prep. him properly. Or I’ll never get the chance to vote for him.

It's obvious that Cain has not been cramming for anything, other that his next book tour, seeking cheers and attention and making money off of future speaking engagements.
There is also another issue that may come up in the near future about Cain's ethical stature and that is an accusation that Cain has violated FEC campaign financing rules, by using Campaign donations (funds) to buy 13,000 copies of his new book from himself. Which would not only allow Cain to get income from the campaign, but also give the impression of how fast his book is selling.

He was a soldier. And not one of our best presidents--he was a big government Federalist. Hell, he wasn't even a very good general, according to the military historians. His saving grace was that he had good generals working for him, and against his own instincts was wise enough to follow their ideas and not his own.

I'm thinking of our better presidents...Reagan, had a solid political resume. Coolidge, same. Jefferson--basically in politics from his early 30s on. Who else...Taft? Career politician.

I’m sticking with Cain. My biggest issue is to straighten out our current economic woes so my children’s generation will not have to bear the consequences of my generation’s indulgence. In that regard, I think Cain would be the President most willing to serve the strongest dose of medicine that this country needs.

Ike isn’t really considered a good president by conservative standards. His SCOTUS appointments were a disaster. His foreign policy wasn’t much better. Robert Taft would have been a better choice.
